These three fruits make excel lent jams and conserves which will be your favorites on your con serve shelf. , Freestone peaches combine with raisins in this one to give a fla vor combination supreme. Try serving Peach Raisin Medley as a meat accompaniment for a de lightful treat. Peach Raisin Mettles' 4 cups chopped freestone peaches 1 cup raisins 1 tsp. grated onion rind 4 cup water Vi cup chopped filberts 2 cups sugar Combine all ingredients except nuts In large saucepan. Place over high heat, bring to a boil; turn dawn heat. Cook until conserve thickens, about a half hour. Add nuts during the last five minutes of cooking. Pour into hot sterilized jars and seal immediately. Yields 3 half-pint jars. Pear Conserve 2 quarts Bartlett pear slices 8 cups sugar 2 oranges, cut In Whs, then in thin slices ' 3 tbs, lemon juice J tbs. candied ginger Vi cup chopped nuts (filberts) Wash, peel and quarter pears, removing cores, then slice in thin slices. It will require 5 to 6 pounds to make 2 quarts. Put in glass bowl and cover with sugar. Let stand overnight. Next day add or ange slices, lemon juice and finely cut ginger pieces and bring to boil. Cook slowly until mixture thick ens. Five minutes before remov ing from heat, add nuts. Ladle into clean, hot half-pint jars and seal at once. Makes 6 half-pints. Bryant, who also moved on his birthday from Springfield to a new home in Veneta, just com pleted. Mr. Darks had helped with construction of the new home. Those present for the birthday celebration were: Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Bryant and his brother-in- law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Koffler and family of Eugene; also Mrs. Dirks' brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Cal Ellis of Salem; and Miss Alice Plum mer of Monroe and Mr. and Mrs. Dirks. mand. Prune Orange Jam is sure to please, One which can be used in tarts or muffim to give them I flair. Prune Orange Jam 11 cups ripe Italian prunes, quartered Vt cup water 8 cups sugar 1 tbs. grated orange rind ' cup rhopped filberts or walnuts 1 box powdered fruit pectin Measure sugar to be added lat er. Wash, pit and quarter Italian prunes. Add water and simmer for 5 minutos. Measure cups oi cooked prunes. Combine grated orange rind and filberts or wal nuts with cooked prunes. Place over high heat and stir in pec tin. Bring to a boil. Add sugar all at once and stir it in. Bring to a full rolling boil and boil for one minute stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir for three minutes. Pour into hot ster ilized jars at once and seal. Makes about 4 half-pint jars. CITY BARS WHITE MICE MT. CLEMENS, Mich. (U.R) This city lost a vital industry when Gerald Schmitt moved out into the country. He raised white mice and sold 1,000 a month to scientific laboratories and hospi tals for experimental purposes. When neighbors complained, the city commission told him he would have to give up his mice or move out of town.
