Police Drop Time Petitions
SALEM (U.R) Salem police
have virtually dropped their at
tempts to get petition signers for
a 40-hour week measure and fire
men have discarded many of the
petitions they have circulated the
past several weeks.
The two groups of city employes,
suspended their petition campaign
after the city attorney and the

and that members of the police
force and fire department faced
dismissal unless the activity stop
ped. Firemen said they believed they
still had about about 1,200 names
on petitions which have been
circulated by friends outside th
civil service. They said many new
helpers joined the wives of fire
men in circulating petitions.
S. P. Stevens, Portland, a vice
president of the International As
sociation of Firefighters, said at
a meeting with firemen Tuesday,
that in his long experience with
the association he had never hearci
of firemen being prevented from
circulating a petition on such a
matter. ; .
The collective bargaining mens
uro would be a charter amend
ment that would have to get voter
approval in the November elec
tion. It affects both firemen ami
policemen.
