As part of a campaign advertis ing a film to be premiered in Portland Jan. 23, "Bend of the River," starring Jimmy (tew art, the group will appear at the Heilig at 7:30 and about 10 p.m. All three, Julia Adams, Lori Nelson and Rock Hudson, play major and minor supporting roles in the picture which was filmed near Mt. Hood last summer. Film to Play Here Bend of the River" will ar rive in Eugene Jan. 24, the day after the premier. A police escort will accompany the trio into town about 5 p.m. after their drive down from Port land. The "Iron Man" per formance promoted star billing in the Oregon film. Heavyweight A former Navy man, Hudson is 27 years old, 6 feet, three inches tall, and weighs 197 pounds. His fan mail volume is reach ing proportions comparable to that of bobby-sox-idol Tony Cur tis, a studio executive said in Eu gene Thursday. He served in the Pacific during the war, based on Guam, Hawaii, Australia and the Philippines. Lori Nelson, a newcomer ti ma jor films, heads the supporting cast of "Bend of the River." The first, a picture of a young World War I widow who loses her baby and devotes the rest of her life to the care of other people's children, has received "rave" notices from many critics. Titled "Tne Blue veil," the film is based upon the theme, "Who raises a child of his own . flesh lives with nature, who raises a child of another's lives with- Ood." Sentimental Drama This gentle and sentimental drama makes no attempt to dis guise or mollify its "tear-Jerking" effects. On the contrary, writing, acting, and direction all are gear ed to extract the maximum emo tion. Tears should flow freely as McDonald audiences see this story of the dedication of an aging nursemaid to her long line of "borrowed" sons and daughters. It starts Sunday. No Self-Pity Aided by a splendid job of makeup, Jane Wyman gives a sen sitive performance, neatly avoid ing the pitfalls of self-pity. The "art" film, "The Tales of Hoffman," takes a little imagina tion from practical minded view ers, but is uninhibited In its effort to wring the utmost from the clas sic material at hand. The movie is a visual interpretation of Offen bach's "Opera I'antastlque." The plot tells of a poet who re lates to his drinking companions in a tavern the story of the three disastrous loves of his life: A Par isian dancing doll, a Venetian courtesan, and a Grecian singer. Brilliant Color The film uses every artistic de vice to intensify an assault upon the senses, and brilliant color, fab ulous sets and costumes become i the background for a richly pre tentious adventure In eye-appeal. Highly decorative ballet is of fered by Moira Shearer, whose "Enchanted Dragonfly" is as breath-takingly beautfiul as her puppet dance is intriguing. Lack of unity and consistency is partly offset by amazing excursions into surrealism, the bizarre use of the camera, and the myriad visual symbols. It starts Wednesday at the May flower Theatre. At the Heilig,- "Flame of Araby," which opened Saturday, continues a run through Tuesday. It tells of a princess, Maureen O'Hara, and a Bedouin, Jeff Chandler, who meet in a search for a wild horse. and being baked a medium-rare by ten rough hours under a hot sun," in her own words. "Some location scout with keen eye for realism picked the rockiest, ruttiest, ruggedest trails available, and we bounced along them for days," she explained rue fully.
