Architect Claims Grass Roof Superior for Modern House Architects have shocked peo ple before with some of their notions and have subsequently been proved right by them. Now comes New England's architect Royal Barry Wills with new ideas. Talking to a group of women in Boston this week he suggested sod roofs for houses lawns, in other words, instead of roofs. "People don't think about roofs when they build houses," said Wills, "but they should. Present day roofs are lacking in individualities. "Attractive, Inexpensive" "Roofs are important in the appearance of a house, particu larly these new houses with roof close to the ground. An attrac tive, utilitarian and inexpensive roof is sod. This is used in many Styles Created For Furniture CHICAGO (U.R) The Ameri can family that buys furniture in 1952 will have more new styles to choose from than ever before in the last 10 years, but some dealers said prices won't be any higher than in 1951. The wide variety of new styles especially for homes where the accent is on modern lines and the possible leveling of furniture prices was revealed at an interna tional home furnishings market last week in Chicago. A total of 2439 furniture makers arranged samples to show buyers from stores across the nation. Wallace O. Oilman, general manager of the mart, said the ex hibits have more to offer in quali ty and variety than in any year since Pearl Harbor without any evidence of a boost in price over last year. Here s what Mr. and Mrs. Amer ica found: The radical lines of the ultra modern furniture have been soft ened and have taken on new dig nity by borrowing from tradition al lines. Rich Appearance "Sod roofs are also inexpen sive to build, since all it is ne cessary to do is to cover the roof with a low grade of tar paper and then apply the sod. Sods give a rich appearance in all seasons of the year. "In winter, the insulating value is very great and such a house may be heated for a rela tively insignificant sum because there could be no heat waste with a sod roof and a foot or two of snow on the sod." All architect Wills failed to explain is how to cut the grass. Method Explained For Fireproofing Cloth Cotton and rayon fabrics in cluding adult clothing, curtains and drapes can be flameproofed cheaply and easily at home with a solution made by dissolving nine ounces of borax and four ounces of boric acid in a gallon of water. Dip clothing and fabrics in this solution. The fire-proofing mix ture is safe to use on any material which can be soaked in water. Reapply the solution each time the article is washed.
