I Magnuson Hits VA Influence WASHINGTON -VP) Senator Magnuson (D-Wash) has urged a Senate committee to deny the Veterans Administration power to fix tuition charges of schools tak ing part in the veterans training program. Magnuson's statement was pre sented a Senate Public Welfare Subcommittee by his administra tive assistant. "An elaborate formula" set up by the VA for the schools allows them "no selling expense and lim its advertising expenditures, ad ministrative expenses and sal aries," Magnuson said. He said more than 50 schools In his state have complained "of the practices of the administration in fixing tuition fees." ' Since 1947, Magnuson said, the VA has fol lowed practices which "have brought it into an attempt to con trol the tuition rates of all schools despite the specific intent of Con gress that no federal agency should exercise this kind o con trol." Magnuson said that undoubted ly some schools are charging higher tuition than justified but that the majority of them are-i doing a good job." S31- News Reporter Was Right WASHINGTON W Senator McCarthy (R-Wis) is going to consult a newsman whenever he feels bad in the future. Plagued with a heavy cold, the Wisconsin senator was talking with Jack Bell of the Associated Press. Bell remarked on Mc Carthy's harseness and said: "Senator, I think you've got virus pneumonia." Startled, McCarthy decided to visit Bethesda, Md., Naval Hos pital for a checkup. Two hours later he telephoned Bell from his hospital bed. "You were right," he said, "It's virus pneumonia." Treated speedily with a new drug, McCarthy expects to be out long enough to vote on Senate ratification of the North Atlantic security treaty. After that, he will go back to bed.
