Page Twelve Officers: Chosen By P-TA Mrs. James Pierron wn elected president of the Lane County Council of Parents and Teachers at the meeting held Thursday at the First Congre gational church. Other officers elected are: Mrs. A. W. Fogelstrom, first vice-president; Mrs. George Graves, second vice-president; Mrs. Carl Powell, recording secretary; Mrs. Carl R. Pfeiffer, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Mike Pakulak, treasurer; Mrs, John Robertson, historian. Mrs. F. W. Blum, president of the Oregon Congress of Par ents and Teachers, was pres ent and told of the state con vention to be held In Portland on April 14 and 15 at the Cen tral Library. Other speakers were Miss Dorothy Denslow of Dr. E. D. Furrer's office, who substituted for him in giving a talk on "The Blood Bank," and Miss Neva Dallas of Salem. Miss Dallas is with the state board of educa- , Hon and told of how commun ities may obtain federal funds for the care of young children while parents are working. Program Given Mrs. C. E. Williamson pre sented the following musical program by students of the . Northwest Christian college: violin solo by William Baird, accompanied by Chester Earls; vocal selections by a quartet who were Bob Prultt, Truman Hobbins, Ronald Yates, and Walter Neff. Miss Maude Gar net, supervisor of public school music at the University of Ore-, gon, introduced Miss Cecile. Creed of the Standard Sym phony Broadcasts. A committee of Mrs. George Spicer and Mrs. Charles Snell strom was appointed to confer with L. C. Moffltt, superin tendent of county schools, and Dr. J. F. Cramer, superintend ent of city schools, concerning a physical fitness program for the youth who will be assisting with the care and harvesting of crops this summer and fall. ' There were twenty units rep resented and thirty-seven reg istered at the meeting. The Washington unit was host group. The next meeting will be May 20 when the officers will be Installed. All unit presi dents and county committee chairmen will make final re ports then. Mt. Vernon P.-T. A. Holds March Meeting MT. VERNON The March meeting of Mt. Vernon P.-T. A. was held last week with a small attendance, but a good time was reported by all present At the close of the b-jslness meeting, St Patrick's day refreshments were served by the committee in charge of the evening. The P.-T. A. voted to buy ten dozen half gallon fruit jars to be used in canning this fall for the hot lunches next year. Anyone having a surplus of fruit or vegetables Is asked to donate it and the mothers will can It Sev eral women present donated fruit jars. Anyone having a few jars to spare may bring them to the schoolhouse for future use. The school clerk, Miss Lucile Vitus, stated that the same teach ers have been hired for the com ing year. The committee In charge of the April meeting will be Mr. and Mrs. Willis Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Faulkner, and Mr. and Mrs. Philip Holts. The treasurer's report stated that $14.07 were made from the fish pond of last month also $7 were turned over to the treasurer by Mrs. Willis Smith and Mrs. Casily from a hard time card party given by them. gtWtUW Church Groups' Notices SUNDAY Loyal Friends of the First Christian church meet after the service -this morning at the church for a potluck dinner, business meeting, and program. All those interested are invited to attend, Dorcas society of the First Christian church meets Tues ' day evening, eight o'clock, in church annex for a business meeting and Red Cross sewing. Hostesses for the evening will be Mrs. Virgil Cameron, Mrs. Harvey Chapmen and Mrs. Z. M. Cox. West WCTU will meet at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon, at home of Mrs. Anna Boyd. A Croquettes offer a delicious (By NEA Service) Let's do some planning in the face of the meat situation we have several alternatives. We can go all-out and serve the old-time roast, as often as our meat ration will permit, and omit meat from other dinner menus. If that is the verdict in your family, you'll want to plan a meatless main dish for the meatless dinners. Here is a sug gestion which should soothe the ruffled feelings of members of the family who, having eaten their roast, are counting the days until the next one makes its appearance. GNOCCHI WITH SPANISH SAUCE (Serves 4-8) One cup milk, 4 teaspoon salt, 1,4 cup wheat-meal, cup grated American cheese, 1 egg, well beaten; paprika. Heat milk in saucepan. Add salt and wheat-meal gradually, stirring constantly. Bring to a boil and cook and stir three minutes. Remove from heat. Add Vi cup cheese and egg and blend. Pour into shallow pan. Chill. Place spoonfuls or 2-inch squares in shallow baking dish and cover with Spanish sauce. Sprinkle with remaining ch'eese and paprika. Bake in hot oven (400 degrees F.) 15 minutes, or until cheese is melted. Spanish Sauce . All those who want rides should meet at the church at twelve o'clock. way to use up left-overs. diced celery, 1 Vi cups canned tomatoes, Vi teaspoon salt, dash of pepper. Melt butter in skillet; add onion, green pepper, and celery and cook slowly until onion is golden brown. Add tomatoes and seasonings. Cook slowly until sauce is thickened. Makes about 1 cup sauce. i Whole grain cereals are still abundant. However, when buy ing them, get extra large pack ages as that will save paper. Use meat as a flavor when it Is hard to get, and add to the main dish by including whole grain cereals. v The following recipes show you how, CABBAGE AND BEEF ROLLS (Serves 4) One-half pound ground beef, Hi cups corn flakes, finely crushed; ',4 teaspoon salt, dash of pepper, 1 tablespoon minced onion, V4 teaspoon Worcester shire sauce, Vi cup milk, 2 tablespoons butter or other fat, 8 medium-sized cabbage leaves, 1V4 cups canned tomatoes, put through sieve, or 1 Vi cups tomato juice, 14 cup sour cream, Vi teaspoon salt dash of pepper. Combine beef, corn flakes, salt, pepper, onion, Worcester shire sauce, and milk. Shape Into 8 rolls. Brown in fat. Cook cabbage leaves, covered, in a small amount of boiling salted water until wilted. Wrap each meat roll in a cabbage leaf and fasten with toothpicks. Return to skillet, add tomatoes mixed THE REGISTER. GUARD, Formal Is Planned In April Job's Daughters are planning a formal dance to be given some time in April. Miss Joy Reb hon is general chairman, other committees for the event to be named later. At the bethel meeting the past week, initiation was held for Misses Hazel Lengacher and Doris Whitsett. The Joint In stallation will take place at the Cottage Grove armory. with sour cream, salt and pep- per. Cover and simmer 40 min utes. Remove rolls to platter. Pour sauce over meat rolls, CELERY KNOB RAGOUT (Serve 4-8) Four small celery knobs or roots (about 1 pound) or 3 cups coarsely diced celery, 2V4 cups boiling water, V4 teaspoon salt, V4 pound ground beef, 1 cup 40 bran flakes, crushed; 5 tablespoons water, teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon finely chopped onion, V4 cup cold water, 4 tablespoons flour. Peel and cut celery knobs Into small cubes. Cook, covered, in boiling water and salt 20 minutes, or until done. Remove from liquid. Combine meat, bran flakes, 5 tablespoons water, salt, and onion, and mix well. Shape into small meat balls and drop, sev eral at a time, into hot celery , stock. Simmer. As balls rise to surface, remove; keep hot Measure stock and add water to make 1V4 cups. Add cold water gradually to flour, mix ing to smooth paste; pour into celery stock, stirring vigorously. Cook until thickened. Add cel ery and meat balls. SAGINAW CLUB MEETS SAGINAW The Friendly Neighbors club met with Mrs. Ruby Benston last week and 14 members were present. Following the business meeting, games were played. Refreshments were served by the hostess. The next meeting will be April 1, with Mrs. Grace Halverson entertaining at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ethel Smith. It will be a "dress up" party, everyone to dress for April Fool's day. Miss Hazel C. Fishwood. Members from Rose burg, Cottage Grove, and Eu gene attended. At the business meeting fol lowing the social hour, Miss Ina Farnsworth of Roseburg was formally initiated. The chapter voted one dollar per capita to be sent to the victory bond fund of the national chapter. On ma turity these bonds will be used to finance work of women writers on educaUonal research and progress. The next meeting of the group will be held at Roseburg ., on April 3. - MRS. F. W. BLUM of Port land, state P.-T.A. president, was a special guest of the Whiteaker P.-T.A. at Its meet ing held Wednesday evening. She spoke of the state conven tion to be 'held in April and of the war stamp drive. Other spe cial guests who visited and spoke briefly were: Mrs. A. R. Fredrickson, city president; Mrs. Nathan Chaffee, county P.-T.A. president; Mrs. George Spicer, state vice-president, and Mrs. Edgar Martin, state his torian. At the business meeting, the nominating committee was elected as follows: Mrs. C. L. Fanning, Mrs. C. M. Wood, and . Mrs. W. E. Bell. The incoming president will be sent to state convention. . For the program Miss Anne Whiteaker gave an account of her experiences ip Portland when she christened the ship Whiteaker. Sh'e also showed a few pictures. Then two films on gardening and under-sea life were shown by Mr. Moore, school principal. The pie social was taken care of by Mrs. How ard Russell, Mrs. Hugus, Mrs. Miller, and Mrs. Fanning. JASPER A wedding shower was given in honor of Sgt and Mrs. Leonard Klingartner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edis C. Marshall, Jasper. Prior to her marriage Mrs. Klingartner was Miss Clara Marshall. The couple are visiting in North Dakota at the home of the bridegroom's parents. It Is the first time Sgt Klingartner has been home for over a year. He is stationed at Camp Adair, Corvallis. Mignon Rebekah Lodge Holds Initiation For One MAPLETON At the regular meeting of Mignon Rebekah lodge last week Doris Vogel was initiat ed. The entertainment committee included Mabel Burbach, Anna Moore, Nettie Whittaker, Luella Peil, Elaine Johnson and Lillian Wheeler, The ladies of the Evangelical church gave a get-acquainted party at the church recently. A St. Patrick's program was carried out led, by Evelyn Doster and Mrs. Knoll. Mrs. E. E. Loomis gave a reading on "Ireland." Lunch was served to about fifty women. The children were cared for in the church nursery. The Initiatory degree was given Lynn Ellingson in the Odd Fellow lodge last week-end. About 17 members were present. Lynn will soon be leaving to enter the serv ice, Bernard Senn left this week for California, having spent a 12 day furlough here.
