AT LONE PINE . LONE PINE Evan Kirk, who had eight days leave from the nav al training station at Camp Farra gut, Idaho, has been visiting his family here. Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Lee and son visited friends here Sunday, Mr. Lee used to teach at the Lone Pine grade school. Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Spencer' of Palouse, Wash., stopped at the G. W. Robinson home recently on their way to Palouse from Mis souri. Spencers ' were early resi dents ot Lone Pine and formerly owned the Piquet place. Miss Juoy Ann Robinson, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robinson, was a re cent guest at her grandparents. Mrs. W. A. Piquet was hostess to the Santa Clara Thimble club at her home recently. The after noon was spent In visiting. Guests ot the club were Mrs. Elgin Bail or, Mrs. Cliff Abrams, and Mrs. Lester Gunson and Rodney Dean. Mr. and Mrs. Robert . Nyce of Seattle are now at the home of Mrs. Nyce's parents, Mr. and Mrs. N. M. Lassen. Women of the community will meet to sew on Wednesday after noon at the schoolhouse. GOES TO NAVY THURSTON Mr. and Mrs. Fred Russel have word that their son, Ben, who lives at Pasadena, Calif., haa left for the U.S. navy service being an ensign. He has been sent to the University of Arizona for a period and then will be at home for a tew days and plans to come to Thurston for a short visit be fore taking up his duties at Treas ure Island where he will be sta. tioned for a while. They also re ceived word from their son, Bel mont, that he is now at home at Brooks, after spending several weeks in a PorUand hospital fol lowing an operation and a relapse. 'X' Marks Thursday Starring Damian O'Flynn and Helen Parrish, the thrilling new Republic mystery melodrama, "X Marks the Spot," will open a three day run at the Heillg Thursday. FRIDAY Women of the Moose will Basket Social Of Aid Said Success JASPER The Jasper Ladies Aid held an old time basket so cial at the grange hall recently. A sum of $22.95 was added to the treasury. A program, consisting of songs, by the group, a monologue, readings, and a tableau, was given. Taking part in the tableau were Roger Soderstadt, Alma Hum phrey, and Joy Wallace with Yvonne Murphey at the piano and Mrs. Grace Jones and Gertrude Humphrey singing. . Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Laird are receiving congratulations on the arrival of a 8.3 pound son, Robert Paxton, who arrived on February 13. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Higgins and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Laird of Jasper. Mrs. Arthur Ruthven has receive ed word from her son, Virgil New ton, that he is now located at Camp Frances E. Warren at Chey. enne, Wyoming, and that her son- in-law, Delbert Wilson, is now stationed in Louisiana. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Neet recently received a letter from their son, Eldred, who is in the navy, stat ing that he is now back in the states being temporarily, located at Atlanta, Ga. While he was In the South Pacific he met Gene Seales, a former high school aC' qualntance and later learned that he was killed in action the next day after their meeting. , Mrs. Fred Cook entertained Mr. and Mrs. P. N. Laird at dinner on Feb. 18 in honor of Mr. Cook's 69th birthday. Thayer Dickey (Theima Lee ' Crowe) was a recent event. Mr. Crosron Feted At School Party MARCOLA A luncheon was given at the high school honoring Charles D. Croston by the student body. A military theme was car ried out under the supervision of the home economics class. Mr. Croston left recently for service In the army air forces. At Grand Rapids, Michigan, he will enter school of meteorology. After a 22 weeks course ha will be commis sioned as a second lieutenant and will receive an assignment as an instructor. Mr. Croston has been at Mohawk two years. He was coach of the- athletic program. Mrs. Croston will remain at Wend ling for a while. Mrs. Madge WiUian is the new ly appointed principal and Mrs. Bernice Willcox and Mrs. Lucille Parsons are newly hired teachers. Miss Gorsline resigned to take up government work at Los Angeles. Mrs. Helen Walling will enter tain the mothers and their chil dren of the Junior Mothers club Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Doris Werner. The food rationing for book No. 2 will be held at Mohawk high school all next week, starting at ' p.m. and lasting until 9 pjn. each day but Saturday, then from 9 i.m. till 9 p.m. All are asked to bring ration book No. 1 for each member of the family, also have the declarer's sheet which will ap pear in the newspaper filled out. Caldwell presented her piano pupils in a recital last Saturday afternoon at the res idence -studio at 353 Madison avenue. Members of the class played their numbers from memory. Compositions ranging from the old world masters to the present day composers were played, with a thought given to comparison of style and form. Miss Patricia Bald win played several numbers . from an advanced group, while Miss Mary Lou Wolfard repre- '' sented the pre-school child, re sponding with several numbers at the close ot the program.
