IN THK EDITOR'S MA II. BAG made In our community to meet our (hare ot expenses for the to see the general drift away from fundamental democracy. When a California sporta man cam up to Salem and lobbied a bill through th house closing tha Rogua River to commercial fishing and (so I am told) putting over 250 families out of a living; and when tha legislature gave tha gamt com mission authority over the game business, to raise a thousand phea- , sants on every square mile if they wish and the farmer can't do a thing without breaking th law. We just wonder what kind of a legislature we have got. Do they know anything about th U. S. constitution? California sportsmen have got us skinned a mil when it comes to nerve and brazen au dacity. Then there is the free text book law that smells like the first step toward a union of church and state. The next logi cal move will be a bill to furnish free hymn book for churches, and pay the salaries of sectarian teach ers and preachers out of the pub lic treasury. It is not a pleasant task to continually watch our law makers: it would be far better to make them pass an intelligence test, an honesty or liars test or what have you, before being elect ed. When public confidence in our officials is lost they have themselves alone to blame. Let us hope for more honest men in pub lic office. DORVIN DUDECK. IOC MILK ROUTES EUGENE (To the Editor) I note with Interest that milk de liveries are to be greatly curtailed, a matter of importance to the pub. lie as a whole, of greater concern tc families having children, and of critical importance to families without refrigeration. Many have been rather scan dalized for a long time at the waste and needless duplication of deliv ery service not only in the Dairy bu-iness bus in many other lines. Roughly there are thirty concerns Ming and delivering rnilK to tu- Kene customers and all of them deliver all over town, yet each oute aaffresates no more custom ers than a few score blocks would pr'Vide if all within the section patronized the same dairyman. To assure the customer uniform j safety and quality of the milk he . consumes, large sums are spent j upon inspection and upon the fa cilities the producer is forced to acquire to mret such Inspection. This added expense is, of course, added to the retail price of the milk. If kept within bounds no fault can be found with this But when an additional .. . . . coming year. live miles or more per day due to Yours truly the fact that he delivers all over, CLENWOOD COMMUNITY ine Cliy. 1 nave ncsiu mm say that if his present aeliveries could be concentrated upon one portion of it he could sell for two cents ; less per quart and make the same profit. ' I believe the general run of cus tomers would gladly cooperate in the suRResled plan if it were "sugared" with a fair reduction : in the cost of delivered milk. I am ; sure I would. It would fit in bet- I tei right now along with the many readjustments due to the war and be vastly less disruptive of con sumer needs, particularly those without refrigeration, than the threatened five or less deliveries per week. Now that war forces us to conserve on gas, tires, trucks and manpower why shouldn't we. the customers, relin qii'sh the now pointless privilege doesn't. very often. Anyway this bad dog is exactly an fight months old female pup (which I can prove) belongs to my irildren and behold wouldn't harm anyone and stays on her own private property. But the com plaining witness and dog catcher ,f deciding which dairyman is to deliver u the standardized prod uct the all carry in return for a proportionate reduction in the price per quart. The distributors could then block out the city In ruch a way that each one realized the same output as before but at about 25 of his present delivery costs.
