That's a nrpttv imnressive (and expensive), lineup of film shows, but it has paid off my making KTTV the leading independent sta tion in the entire country and there's not a local-flavor show in I the whole kit and kaboodle. fVWlv nouph it is the hs net work shows which have taken over 1 the art of outune the so-called "little people" on TV and making it pay, such as the contestants on "'You Bet Your Life." "Tne $64,- 000 Question," "Truth or Conse- auences. "This Is Your Lite, "PeoDle Are Funny." "Strike II Rich" and Art Linkletter's "House Party." There is still tremendous interest! in just Plain people, both real ones and those oortraved in dramatic shows, but apparently tne local stations have lost the knack of Duttinff it across. Which is too bad. It was great fun while it lasted. STARRTJUST: Arthur Franz and Reverlv Garland' are doinr their fifth co-starrine film together la "Tee Late t Run,' a "Playhouse of Stars" episode. They keep this mi and they'll wind bd with an 'Art and Bev series ol weir ewa with five "pilots" already In the can. Gale Storm will make a new film series, droooinz both the "Margie" characterization and Charlie Far rell. Actually. Charlie himself has dropped TV of his own volition. He is just going to stay at his Kac auet club in Palm SDrines and play in the sun. He can afford it. TV actress Joan Shawlee isn t nne to talk about it. but she's filed for divorce. It happens There's a Professor Backwards at the Statler in Los Angeles these days, an old-time nightclubber who is more than ripe for i v and who will be grabbed before uus tvrje is drv. Johnnv Carson is battlin? wim script trouble, which means spon sor trouble. It's the same old story. Two seconds after a spon sor signs for a show, ne becomes an all-kriowintr nroducer. It's as though a Max Liebman were to trv to tell the Colgate people how to make toothpaste. Shoemakers should stick to their lasts, and snnnsnrs should stick to theirs. It's now official, according to the Trendex rating: "The $64,000 Question is the No. 1 snow in the nation. And "Truth or Conse quences," opposite it on NBC, is setting out of that tune spot last.
