The Oregon-Washington" Con ference of the church comprised 65 separate churches while there were 23 churches in the Oregon Conference. The united confer ence claims about 11,000 mem bers. -A joint commission on confer ence union has been working since both conferences became integral parts of the Evangelical United Brethren Church when the former Church of the United Brethren in Christ and the for mer Evangelical church merged in 1948. (Statesman Photo) Layman Plans To Lead Rite On Sunday Sunday at the 11 o'clock serv !ce in the First Congregational Church Donald Rowland, a lay man of the church, will deliver , the sermon. ' Rowland, 30, has taught the adult Sunday School vlass for two years and this past year was vice president of the Salem Council of Churches. Mr. and Mrs. Rowland and their three children will leave Salem next month for Berkeley, Calif., where he will enter the Pacific School of Reli gion to begin preparation for the Christian Ministry. Following the service there will be a coffee hour to enable friends to bid the Rowlands farewell. This will be the last Sunday of regular Church School classes in the Congregational Church until Sept 11th. The Church-time Nursery will continue throughout the summer. Driver Learns PORTLAND on - "All right, pull over to the curb," a voice from a loudspeaker hidden in a car said. : The automobile ahead obeyed the command, and its driver, Portland policeman Robert Jones, got out. The embarrassed, loud- speaker concealing motorist Charles B. Johnson. 22, said he thought the patrolman was an ac quaintance. Jones explained that audio sys tems were illegal in private cars and cited Johnson for violation of the city's anti-noise ordinance.
