They've calculated things, these charity pitches around Christmas time, when hearts are mellow but pocketbooks, unfortunately, are already squeezed. We're allergic to a requested buck for charity or any other purpose when we know we re be- ing systemat ically exploit ed, i so we would appreci ate ithe ' hat s (being- passed at any time ' other than dur- season. Solicitors for donations to a 'worthy cause knocking on our holly-wreathed door at this time of year receive nothing but a promise, and not even that it they look like they're slyly work ing us for a sucker. But there are two notable exceptions. Tired as the public might be of charity drives of every sort, espe cially whea the Christmas spirit is supposed to make yon n easier mark, yon must admit that the Red Cross drive for blood donations right now is fully justi fied. This is the time of year that even the eager and regular blood donor is so busy buying and wrap ping gifts and trimming a tree that he forgets. So December's the month in which the Red Cross blood bank always suffers. For this reason, and also be cause no cash is , requested, we excuse the current campaign. X KPTV What's Cooking! He's doing more than his bit, so we all should dp at least a part of ours. t Another and also most worthy campaign just launched is for the benefit of our Olympic team aext year financing the sending of our sportsmen abroad to vie for honors, and spread good will at the same time. While every red blooded American red blooded enough to donate a pint to the Red Cross too? should want to help our Olympic teams span the Atlantic and join the games, it strikes as this was an unfortunate time to kick off the fund-raiser ( I a Sacramento's KCCC-TV just concluded tele thon. We're all for its lofty purpose, but we have our fingers crossed for its immediate success. You'll do yourself and your country a good service by lending a second ear right after Santa Claus' bills have been paid. : ' HOLLYWOOD-CRITICS COR NER: Latest of Mickey Rooney's serialized antics was in the same impossible groove which is wear ing son thin the show's liable to be yanked any time. There was a chuckle ; here and there during Mickey's improbable involve ments with a beauteous damsel loaded with cash, both her charms and money under his dubious guardianship. Technically; there is everything here fori a good string of shows and Mickey's as loaded with fans as his heart in terest was loaded with dollars, but both his popularity and that rather overworked situation failed to hold an audience which prob ably trickled or rushed over to or back to Jackie Gleason and Art Carney. i i "Hey. Mulligan!" has from the first delivered a mush Impact with . action best described as helter-skelter. We lay most of th- blamefo weak scripting but must admit some of "Mulligan's low rating is due to the opposing Jackie Gleason powerhouse. There's a Saturday night situa i tion here much like the Monday evening struggle NBC has against CBS's "Lucy." It's going to take a far better show than "Mulli gan": to dent CBS's consistently good Jackie Gleason show. That it could be done, however, is in dicated by slow but sure rise Of Monday s "Medic against the gradually 'declining "I 'Love Lucy." (Copyright 1954. !
