S. air field near here, is putting finishing touches on an 8,000-foot runway that will be able to handle America's biggest warplanes, including atom-bomb carriers. Col. Fred O. Easley Jr. says the new runway is part of an im provement program. The field represents one of Libya's biggest industries. Last year's payroll for native employes was $325,000. "Our relations with the Libyans are excellent," says Col. Easley, "and we hope to keep it that way. They have been especially cooperative." Champ Couple At Penning LAWTON, Okla. (JP) Sgt: Bar rie I. Posey and his wife are claim ing the letter-writing champion ship of the armed forces. In seven months, Mrs. Posey has penned 940 airmail letters to her husband stationed in Ger many. The sergeant is no slouch, himself. He's written 572 letters during the same period. Mrs. Posey has averaged about three or four letters a day. Chief topic is their 3-year-old daughter, Teresa. And, if all of those letters were n't enough, the Poseys telephone each other occasionally. MUSICIANS WANTED BISMARCK, N. D. (JP) There's a band here which is short clarin et players, but no rush is expected to fill the jobs. Warden Oscar Ny gaard says the North Dakota Pen itentiary band has about 25 mem bers now. The boys are showing much improvement lately, but the clarinet section is weak and needs more personnel. Superstition Will Allow Porpoise In Fresh Waters KITTY HAWK, N. C, (JP) An old superstition among seafaring folk is preventing the annihilation of a school of ocean porpoises in lower Currituck Sound. The playful and sleek porpoises, which usually live only in salt wa ter, recently moved into the fresh waters of the sound.: Commercial fishermen report they are serious ly interfering with their take of fish. One old-timer estimated that a school of 20 porpoises consumes about 6,000 pounds of fish daily. Superstition says to kill a por poise is "as unlucky as walking under a dozen ladders." a- DUMMY SCARES MOTORISTS ROCKFORD, 111. WP)-Frightened motorists called police on a recent Saturday night to report seeing the body of a man hanging from a railroad viaduct. Police cut it down. It wore a mask and was fully dressed, in cluding hat and shoes. It was a dummy. Water for Sale 10 Cents, Pail MONTREAL (JP)- With one of the world's largest rivers, the St. Lawrence, at their doorstep, housewives in the town of Ville Jacques Cartier buy drinking water at 10 cents a pail. Backyard pumps freeze up In winter, and well-water becomes too muddied for drinking. The great river itself is frozen" solid at this point. Waterman J. A. Peladeau has been supplying the community for seven years. He himself buys the water from an acqueduct in a nearby community and carts it in a tank on his truck. Holiday For Irish Held on March 17 DUBLIN, (JP)-St. Patrick's Day March 17 is one of Ireland's three big holidays. The others are Christmas and good Friday. Although both a legal and re ligious holiday it honors the saint who converted Ireland to Christianity the celebrations re semble those in the United States on the Fourth of July, with pa rades and political speeches. Irish pubs are closed on the three holidays, and in all the length and breadth of the Emer ald Isle there's but one place to legally toast its patron saint: the Annual Dog Show at Bell's Bridge outside Dublin.
