Oregon, Friday, March 21, 1951 Adjustment Period Needed PITTSBURGH (JP) A pretty exchange student from the free University of Berlin and now a doctoral candidate at Carnegie Tech says German youths have not had time to adjust themselves from war to peace and then to re armament. Blue-eyed Irene V. Reitzenstin thinks some of the confusion In the minds of German youth could be alleviated if the university could afford more cultural pro grams. This would give the stu dents the spiritual strength need ed. Many of the students, she says, are refugees from the Soviet rone of Berlin where no Western pa pers are permitted and the radio stations are policed. Most refugees and West Germans can't afford to go to school. Sr- D t " Nv SALElft MERCHANTS Languages Made Easier CINCINNATI (JPh Learning foreign langauges is not the ted ious grind it once was at least not at the University of Cincin nati. Here the students have a large soundproof laboratory where they get acquainted informally with the language while they learn it. They have foreign-language rec ords and movies, a tape recorder and a short wave radio for for eign station and Voice of America broadcasts. The four hours of lab work are in addition to three hours of reg ular classroom study each week. One beginning class conducted a debate -entirely in Spanish after only four months study. Dr. Chesley M. Hutchings, act ing head of the department of ro mance languages, originated the group study method a number of years ago. The laboratory has been in operation since 1950. Malaya to Return Chinese to China KUALA LUMPUR, Malaya, (7P) The Federation of Malaya govern ment is proposing to repatriate Chinese who wish to return to China with their families. The government has asked the legis lative council to appropriate $133, 000 to give the scheme a three months' trial. Purpose of the voluntary repa triation scheme is to get rid of Chinese who feel they have closer ties to China than to Malaya. It would apply primarily to those Chinese squatters who are dissat tisfied with the government's pro gram to put them in resettlement areas in order to curb 8 id to Com munist territorists. C Library Has Books 500 Years Old CESENA, Italy, (JP) The Mala testian library, one of the oldest in the world, will celebrate its fifth centenary this spring. The library was founded in 452 by Prince Domenico Malatesta, and was kept by the Franciscan Brothers until 1866 when the Ital ian state took over the property. The books have been kept with almost religious care for the past five centuries. Rotarians Vie In Attendance DuQUOIN, IU. (VPinckney ville Rotarians wheeled an acci dent victim into a Rotary meet ing in their efforts to win attend ance contest with the Du Quoin club. Moreover the Pinckneyville member was wheeled into the Du Quoin club to get credit on Pmck neyville's record. It's a rule that visitors' attendance be credited to home clubs. The visitor was Ray Shute who had been injured at Pinckney ville. He had not been released from the hospital in time to at tend his home club's weekly meet ing, so he was taken to Du Quoin in an ambulance. DIPLOMATIC REPRESENTA TION PLANNED VENTIANE, Indo-Chlna (JP) The Laotian government expects eventually to establish diplomatic representation in three of the world's most j important capitals. A foreign ministry source said it was hoped, to send ministers or ambassadors to London, Paris and Washington. Laos presently has a minister in Bangkok, capital of Thailand.
