TRIPOLI, Libya (JP)- Wheelus
Field, big U. S. air field near here,
is putting finishing touches on an
8,000-foot runway that will be
able to handle America's biggest
warplanes, including atom-bomb
carriers.
Col. Fred O. Easley Jr. says the
new runway is part of an im
provement program. The field
represents one of Libya's biggest
industries. Last year's payroll for
native employes was $325,000.
"Our relations with the Libyans
are excellent," says Col. Easley,
"and we hope to keep it that way.
They have been especially cooperative."

ship of the armed forces.
In seven months, Mrs. Posey
has penned 940 airmail letters to
her husband stationed in Ger

himself. He's written 572 letters
during the same period.
Mrs. Posey has averaged about
three or four letters a day. Chief
topic is their 3-year-old daughter,
Teresa.
And, if all of those letters were
n't enough, the Poseys telephone
each other occasionally.
MUSICIANS WANTED
BISMARCK, N. D. (JP) There's
a band here which is short clarin
et players, but no rush is expected
to fill the jobs. Warden Oscar Ny
gaard says the North Dakota Pen
itentiary band has about 25 mem

much improvement lately, but the
clarinet section is weak and needs
more personnel.
Superstition Will
Allow Porpoise
In Fresh Waters
KITTY HAWK, N. C, (JP) An
old superstition among seafaring
folk is preventing the annihilation
of a school of ocean porpoises in
lower Currituck Sound.
The playful and sleek porpoises,
which usually live only in salt wa
ter, recently moved into the fresh
waters of the sound.: Commercial
fishermen report they are serious
ly interfering with their take of
fish. One old-timer estimated that
a school of 20 porpoises consumes
about 6,000 pounds of fish daily.
Superstition says to kill a por
poise is "as unlucky as walking
under a dozen ladders."

Holiday For Irish
Held on March 17
DUBLIN, (JP)-St. Patrick's Day
March 17 is one of Ireland's three
big holidays. The others are
Christmas and good Friday.
Although both a legal and re
ligious holiday it honors the
saint who converted Ireland to
Christianity the celebrations re
semble those in the United States
on the Fourth of July, with pa
rades and political speeches.
Irish pubs are closed on the
three holidays, and in all the
length and breadth of the Emer
ald Isle there's but one place to
legally toast its patron saint: the
Annual Dog Show at Bell's Bridge
outside Dublin.
A steering oar is considered more
effective for small boats than a
rudder.
