Harbert-Hamilton Duo Easy Inverness Victor By Frits HoweU TOLEDO, O., July 24 In the most spectacular scoring splurge the 12-year-old tournament has ever seen, Melvin (Chick) Harbert of Detroit and Bob Hamilton of Landoyer, Md., today won the Inverness Four-Ball matches and grabbed $4,450 in prize money. The two hot shots played per-i feet partnership golf in out shoot ing seven other star twosomes. Harbert had 25 birdies and two eagles, and Hamilton 27 birdies and on eagle in the seven matches. They compiled a plus 19 total under the Inverness scoring sys tem, second largest in history, and their 14-point margin over run-ners-up Clayton Haefner and Skip Alexander was the greatest ever. The new champs lost only one of their seven best-ball frays, a two-down decision to Lloyd Man grum and Johnny Palmer, the p re tourney favorites who wound up in fifth place with a minus 1 reckoning. Under the Inverness system a team gets a plus for each hole finished "up" on an opponent, and the loser gets a corresponding minus. Hamilton and Harbert wheeled into today's pair of matches with a plus 14 score which had the tourney "in the bag." They put it on ice with a three-up win over Haefner and Alexander this morn ing, and a two-up win over Fred die Haas and Dave Douglas, the last placers. In the grand finale staged before about 11,000 gal leryites. Sam Snead, substituting for South African Bobby Locke who refused to play aer winning the recent British Open, teamed with Dick Metz to finish in third place with plus 3. Snead-Metz lost two down to Mangrum and Palmer this morning, but won over Jim my Demaret and amateur Frankie Stranahan this afternoon, one up. Demaret and Stranahan, who started out deep in the cellar, climbed back to even by splitting two matches today, and wound up in fourth place with a big zero which was good for $1400.
