Three-quar-,ters of an hour later Chief W. W. Laws, making his hourly rounds, discovered Mrs. Lotfs body sus pended from her cell door, a piece of the mattress cover looped a round her neck. Cornell Men Study Togs in School Class ITHACA, N.Y.-(INS)-Twenty-seven young men who have been taking a two hour weekly course on men's clothing during the academic year at Cornell are con vinced of its value. They may not be the best dress ed men on the campus as a re sult, but they found other values In it. Cornell initiated the for-men-only course this past year after numerous questions on clothing problems showed there was a de mand for it. "What's the most serviceable material for a business suit?" they wanted to know. "How can I get grease spot trff my trousers?" "Should I wear a dark suit to an afternoon wedding?" Miss Margaret Humphrey, as sociate professor In charge, be gan working on her curriculum a year ago. She contacted manu facturers of men's suits, shirts, hats, shoes, gloves. They responded by sending her comprehensive" ekhibits of the history of men's clothing and the processes of their manufacture from the raw product to the fin ished shirt, suit coat, or derby. Ithaca merchants also cooperated by sponsoring field trips to their retail establishments. Too Much Rice In Kurohaim TOKYO -(INS)- In rice-hungry Japan, Isao Kurokawa found rice slowly driving him out of his own home. Two years ago Kurbkawa's landlord went on a trip and asked KUrokawa to pick up his rice ra tion while he was away. Last veek the landlord still hadn't returned and Kurokawa was still faithfully storing up the rice. Finally, with little room left in the house and fearing police might suspect him of black-marketing, Kurokawa gave up and appealeed to authorities for help. Hightower WASHINGTON, July 24-P)-Secretary of State Acheson was re ported today to have ordered. the "best brains" available in and out of government to work on China policy. A full-scale effort is afoot to create a new pattern for American diplomacy in the Far East. Acheson's No. 1 trouble-shooter and international negotiator, Ambassador Philip C. Jessup, has been assigned to soark an intensive study oi tne tar eastern situation. It will be made by half a dozen non-governmental experts on that area of the world. Jessup is directing preparation of a forthcoming "white paper" on past American policies toward China. It is supposed to clear the way for a new policy. Opposition Stirred Plans for the document have stirred opposition both for the Chinese nationalists, whose . em bassy has urged reconsideration, and on capitol hill. Senator Mc Carran (D-Nev) said it would play into communist hands' and shouldn't come out now. The Far Eastern policy review involves Jessup, Acheson himself, policy planner George F. Kennan, Deputy Undersecretary Dean Rusk, Far Eastern Affairs Chief Walton Butterworth and various other top-ranking American dip lomats. Reaches Critical Point This has now reached a critical point in two respects. First, the white paper is tentatively due the first week in August and the ur gency now falls upon means of dealing with the future. Second, the situation in China is rapidly aproaching in a new phase, long-expected. A revived communist sweep to the south to ward Canton is regarded here as putting the finishing pressures on what remains of the Chiang Kai shek administration. It may speed the day when the communists will proclaim (probably in early fall) a government of their own. This will raise the question of recognition. Railroad Theme Blossoms as Hit CHICAGO -(INS)- Hit songs have come from movies, musical comedies and Tin Pan Alley, but there's a new one moving up fast that can thank a railroad fair for its start. i It's called "Gone to Chicago" and is the theme of the; Chicago Railroad Fair, 1949 version. The song was introduced by its writ er, Meredith Willson, on his radio program. RCA-Victor has it on wax with the Pied Pipers aided by authentic sound effects at start and finish. The new song gises the f'Atchin son, Topeka and Santa Fe" treat ment to the Windy City's Chicago and North Western. The Chinese used natural gas as fuel to evaporate brine ! for salt more than 2,000 years ago. By DAVE COX in Mt. Angel r if R Portland Produce PORTLAND.
