2 Leaders Ask Statehood for Territories NEW YORK, Oct. 20.-P-Jo-seph R. Farrington, delegate to congress from Hawaii, tonight called on congress to grant state hood to Hawaii, declaring such ac tion "would greatly enhance the influence of the United States in the Pacific and among all depend ent peoples." "To compel the people of this territory to continue in their pres ent status," he told the 16th annu al New York Herald Tribune for t m. "Would be not only the vio lation of a promise, but contrary to the wish of the people them selves, who voted tor statehood in a plebiscite in 1940." Krnest H. Cruening, governor of Ala&ka, urged that congress grant statehood to the territory, and said the present political status and ec onomic conditions of Alaskans "are more closely akin to serfdom than to "sovereignty." "For half a century the economy of Alaska has reld chiefly on two industries, salmon fishcnc and gold mines,' both at present lan guishing, partly as a result of federal policies. "Alaska's other vast potential ities have remained undeveloped chiefly owing to inappropriate laws imposed by congress, con servation measures which have often not conserved but often have paralyzed, and an economy dom inated by absentees whose chief purpose was to extract wealth of Alaska rapidly, take it away with them and leave little or nothing within the territory." Taylor, is a little rusty on his riding but nevertheless he is going to start off next Sunday on a transcontinental horseback ride preaching the doctrine of bro therly love. Senator Taylor plans to leave from Seal Beach, Califs and head east through El Paso, Tex., on a southern route to the southeast coast. He has no itinerary mapped but he will speak whenever and wherever the opportunity affords, he said today. At that time the group said this area would need an additional 1,565,000 kilowatt scours of electricity by 1953 to rteet the anticipated demand. Fraik Warren, executive vice president of the Portland General Electric Co., was named today to take charge of a project by which the power executives will study revised estimates of the demand up to 1956. Warren probably will have a report on the matter with in two or three weeks, Erdahl said.
