Trie Statesman The wool market has picked up somewhat during the past two weeks, with improvements made especially in the finer grades of wool. The wool program, recently au thorized by congress, was resum ed on August IS. Support is auth orized at the 1946 level. Only wool owned by the producer on August mum advance permitted by the credit corporation, which is 40 cents a pound. The balance be tween this advance and the CCC purchase price will be paid to the producer as soon as the grading of the wool is completed and the CCC has taken it over, Jones says Production of wool and lambs was smaller this year than last, owing largely to fewer ewes. FfeCDCN US FOR SPEAKING INTO STC? BUT TWr5 IS THE WEDOINCj ANNIVERSARV 1 I im I There was a reduction of 10 per cent in the number of ewes in the western states and six per cent in the fctieep states eastward. This is the smnlfrst lamt) crop wncc 192S, nearly 26 per cei.l uiulrt the 1W36-4S average. Ttie weMern lamb crop was 11 per cent hjclow last year and 25 per cent tjclow average. Oregon's lamb crop was 8 per rent below 1946 and 44 per cent below average. 15 is eligible for purchase Under the program. W. A. Jones, Salem, local repre sentative of the Pacific Wool Growers, which played a large part in obtaining the passage of the wool bill, explains that the wool legislation provides that the average price to be paid to wool producers be in line with the 1946 support price which was slightly more than 42 cents a pound grease basis. As of July 15 this year, the national average price being re ceived by growers was 39.2 cents. .Some adjustments have been made in the purchase price sched ule so that higher prices will be paid on fine wools and a little less for the lower grades, which are less in demand, says Jones. The new wool law also provides that commodity credit corporation may sell its stockpile of wools on a competitive basis. Previous legis lation required that such wools be sold at not less than parity. Some 1.600 growers are -ship ping over a million pounds of val- ey wool to Pacific Wool Grow ers which is a U. S. approved han dler and will act as an agent for the CCC in handling wools. Corn set the pace for the rest of the market, as it has in all ses sions for recent weeks, although wheat showed resistance to the late selling and finished with prices practically unchanged. At one time July wheat and Decem ber oats reached new seasonal highs. Wheat closed unchanged to 'i lower, September $2.3l2, corn was to 4 cents lower, Septem ber $2.33' -2 33, and oats were lto li lower, September $1.04 i-4. Wheat was aided by a some what more aggressive commodity credit corporation buying policy and Washington reports that ex ports will be heavy this autumn, possibly exceeding allocations. The CCC raised its wheat buy ing price 3 cents after the close yesterday, offring $2.29 at Kansas City and $2.404 a bushel at Chi cago. Short $11,800 NEW YORK.
