Stocks Thrown For Losses j NEW YORK, July O-iJPf-Ti-nancial markets presented some what of a paradox during the past week with major commodities hit- Unx highs for about 23 yearsH while stocks generally were thrown for losses. ! Cotton futures and grains de veloped further strength although running into some profit taking as the week ended. These were buoyed by widespread demand end the absence of OPA! ceilings. 1 Shares, on the other hand, ex hibited considerable nervousness and indecision as numerous cus tomers trimmed accounts to await results of the congressional battle over price controls. Some specials did fairly; well at Intervals but selling became more pronounced in the final Friday session with virtually all departments suffer ing casualties. 1 Steels were in front of the Fri day stumble which brought the week's largest volume of 1.130.000 shares. A. few aviations such as Lockheed and Transcontinental at Western Air weakened following the g o v e r n m e n t's action ip grounding all Constellation trans ports pending investigation of a' recent crash. Both stocks dropped Some 4 points each at the worst, as the two companies were prin cipally affected by the CAA de cree. They late$ halved their losses. i For the week the Associated press BO-stock average snoweo a net loss of a point at 78.2. where it was 4.2 points under the 15 year high of Last May 29 and 6 points above the 1948 low of Feb ruary 26. , Legal Notice PROCLAMATION ' WHEREAS, Ue unregulated um of certain forest area Is. Activity was light in both pits in view of the uncertain out look for the OPA bill. Some hedging pressure entered oats and there was also selling by prominent local traders. A heavy movement of cash oats to market is expectett within a short time. Th 5 -cent advance in corn car ried the January delivery to $1.704. Oats were lower to 4 higher, with the July delivery showing the decline and closing at 88-H. There was a sharp sell-out in this contract right at the close. Barley was riot traded. Marker to Elarly Settlers Proposed PORTSLAND, Ore., July A memorial to Jesse, Lindsay and Charles Applegate, early pioneers who entered western Oregon from the south via the Klamath area, was proposed today by Walter Meacham of the Oregon Council of the American Pioneer Trails association. The council recommends erection of a stone marker, faced with a bronze pllaque, just off the highway near the pioneer Applegate home near Ynncalla in Douglas county. The Applegate established the southern trait from the Idaho re gion in 1843. CHICKEN CACHE OF NOISE ASTORIA. Ore..
