V Trombone's Derby Tossed High For Vic Meyers; Makes No Speeches and Is Nominated With Record Ma j ority SEATTLE, Sept. (AP) They snatched the derby off the trombone and tossed it to the ceiling in honor ; of Vic Meyers today. J For he beat the tom-tom, flipped the cow-bell, scuffed the zither with a whisk-broom and captured the democratic renomination for lieutenant-governor with probably the largest number of votes ever ac- v corded a candidate for the post in state history. . He received more than the total vote cast for his 20 democratic and republican opponents and fire times that of his nearest com petitor. He led all candidates: for state and national office In j the number of votes received. i As the northwest's best known orchestra leader, Meyers was "bitten by the political bug' in 1932 when newspaper reporters Jested him into running for mayor of Seattle on a platform Involv ing a hostess on every streetcar, cracked-ice on midnight street cars and flowerboxes on water hydrants. He lost the mayorality election but in the state primary and gen eral elections he was swept Into the office of lieutenant-governor. ' For preparation for this week's primary, however, Meyers had turned serious. He didn't mike a single speech. ; 'It may sound funny, but it's true. People liko music better than they - like speeches. Most of the speeches didn't mean any thing. Instead I sat down to the piano. J a c k Bain, my musical campaign manager; stood beside me. I played, he sang, and they liked it. ! 1 Langh Boomerangs j "We went all over the state. We went places that no other pol itician thought of .visiting.
