Mar. 31 Con- Btruction costs are slightly higher than they were one year ago, ac cording to statistics just compiled by the, Associated General Con tractors of America. Virtually no change nas been recorded since November. This is the first time In two years that a single lever has been held throughout three consecutive months. The average of construction costs now almost exactly double the average recorded for 1913. A scale which places the 1913 aver age at 100 as its basis shows the February mark to have been 199 The average level recorded for 1927 was 200, while the corre sponding figure for 1926 was 197. Only two changes in the aver age of wages paid in the construe tion industry have been registered since September, 1926. The most recent of these changes, recorded two months ago, wss a 6light de cline that had no effect upon the general cost average. The average of prices paid for basic construction materials ha not shown an increase since las' September, while declines have been registered in October, No vember and December. The pres ent year not yet has witnessed a change In this average. With the averager of wages re malning virtually unchanged dur lng many months, the trend o' construction costs in general ha largely been governed by the prices of construction material? These prices, in turn have showr distinctly different trends In each of the three most recent years. Ir 1925. the opening months of thf year found prices at a high level with decreases being noted in April. May. August and Septem ber. In 1926. the opening of thf year found prices at the am? level Indicated for January of th if year, with decreases in March May, August and October more than offsetting increases in Feb ruary and November. A genera tendency toward higher levels war shown by material during 1927 strong increases in January, Feb ruary, March and September over coming the effects of declines ir May.
