Today Salem lias 'f ight fruit, Ix rrv and vegetable canning plains and in 1S2 the output was more (ban 1 .000,000 cases. Every year, our running plants increase their capacity. There is every reason to believe that the fruit and In-rry acreage will increase from j ear to year, and as a result, the canning output will increase in proportion. There jire many reason why this canning output increase during the next ten or fifteen years as fast in proportion as it did in the lat sixteen. The first reason in the fact that the district surrounding Salem is by nature the greatest fruit and berry district in the northwest. A second reason is the fact that, speaking in terms of freight, Salem is only ftOO miles from Xcw York City and the Atlantic seaboard. Canned fruits and berries can be shipped from Salem, via the Panama canal to cities on the Atlantic coast for 54 cents per hun dred founds, same as Indianapolis, Ind. With such conditions, tt is inevitable that real estate in Salem and its trading terri tory is bound to increase in value. In no city of the northwest do such favorable conditions exist. ' PAVED AND MACADAM KOADS Xo cily in the northwest is blessed with such a. network of paved aud macadam roads as Salem. And I wived roads mean letter business and social conditions for any community. Within a radius of 2.U miles, there are !Eio miles of paved roads and OCSO miles of macadam roads in the Salem district, all leading direct to Salem. A community with paved roads and no dirt roads is sure to attract settlers from east ern states. Xo community in the Missis sippi valley, or even the eastern states, is blessed with such good roads as the Salem district. In this paved roads district, there will come first the reaction for higher pric es for farm lands. Already in the rural districts fewer and fewer farms are being .offered for sale. Farmers are now Caring this question: It I sell out, where can ."I move to where I will have better opportun ities for farming and where I ran find a community better than Marion and Polk counties with their good roads and all American cliasens? The answer is: "You can't- find any such community." Any farmer who will visit other communities before offering his place for sale, will soon learn that Marion and Polk county real fstate, 'considering price, cannot be excelled by any district in the west.
