The Salem Rod and Gun club is sponsoring a turkey shoot to day which will be the largest stioot that has been held in the valley this year. 1 The sportsmen will be divided into three groups, good, medium and poor shooters. Men who shoot well will not compete with men who do not shoot so well. The sport will be governed by field captains, who will formulate squads composed of men of their 'own class. ," Besides corn-fed turkeys which range in weight from 10 to 15 pounds, there will be capons and geese. The bird being shot for will be selected from the flock and placed in a cage near the pull station, so that the shooters may see and examine to. their ovn satisfaction, the bird for which they are shooting. The shoot will start promptly ai ,9 o'clock, and will probably last weil into the afternoon, on the Red bhd Gun Club's shooting grounds. NEW YORK, Dec. 14. (By Associated Press.) Columbia university officials announced to night they "had withdrawn their offer to Knute ltockne of Notre Dame to become bead coach of the local football squad. T 1 Inllnn Kir tho Pnl n mi o fnnttioll committee followed a long con ference this afternoon with Rockne, during whk-h he ad mitted he1 was already under con tract to the University of Notre Dame, where be has acted as coach for eight years. In an official statement, the Columbia committee also said Rockne had signed a three-year contract to coach football at Columbia, effective next spring, but made no attempt to explain Rockne's apparent failure to re veal the existence of his contract with the Indiana institution, while negotiating the new agree ment. Rockne, in a statement tonight declared his agreement with Columbia was made contingent specifically upon his release by Notre Dame and that he had not been consulted in connection with his appointment as coach to the New York institution. The sophomores eliminat ed the juniors Friday afternoon, defeating them 7r0. Winning of the tournament gives the senior class a good chance to take off the interclass rivalry honors of the high school, this year. BWHCCJSE. Services Trial of the case fo Gustav Dun kelberger to recover $2000 from the board of regents' of Oregon ag ricultural college for alleged breach of contract, has been: set" before Judge Skipworth of Lane county at Corvallia today. Waldespel was arrested for the alleged! crime October 24. He could not find a lawyer, it is said, and for some time his case hung fire. He was released on bail No vember 12 over a month ago, and has been enjoying liberty since then. Guy Smith, it is said, has ben retained as his lawyer. "Notre Dame will not stand in the way of Knute Rockne, if he wishes to go to Columbia university," Pres ident Matthew Walsh declared to night when infdrined Rockne had signed the Columbia contract without informing Columbia rep resentatives of his contract with Notre Dame. "Rockne can stay at Notre Dame or he can leave. It. is up to him. The contract means nothing to us. If he can better himself at Columbia I will be the first to congratulate him," Father Walsh declared.
