And they are going to the mar kets as Oregon walnuts. That is the trade '' name. Just Oregon walnuts. The same is true of th4 other branches of the exchange; j There is a very good reason for this. Tthe reason is that Oregon walnuts are the highest quality walnuts known in the entire world. The' next best are the Cal-i ifornia walnuts. Right now Ore gon first grade (Jumbo grade) walnuts are' selling for 32 cents a pound. California's best wal nuts are selling at 15 cents a pound. In all the above cases, prices are to the jobbers. Last yeart the local plants of the Oregon Walnut Exchange were at" Satem, Amity, Dundee, Scholia and Lebanon. Two more have been added this year, at Dal las and Hillsboro. W. H. Cummings is the mana ger of the Salem branch of the exchange. He is receiving the walnuts of the members at the. Salem Fruit Union building. Three Cents, and Mediums The different grades go into different 100 pound sacks. For Instance, a sack containing tne first grade walnuts has printed on it in large, plain letters; that fact that it contains the Jumbo grade of Oregon Pranquettes or, Mayet- tes, as the case may be. The next grade is called Large, 'and the next Medium, and the next Small. " j r'k'- "-tn There are also cuiis'' but 'ttiese are not marketed except as walT n ut meats. The Jumbo size is also put up in five and ten pound sacks, in 100 pound bales, for the trade de siring those sizes. Just Getting Started The walnut industry in Oregon which means the WUlamette val ley, is just getting a thoroughly good start. The sales of nuts this year will be around 1.000,000 pounds, and this will increase very rapidly from now on, because most of the trees are young or just coming into bearing. For in stance, on the Sky Line orchard, 212 acres, near Salem, the yield was just a few nuts at eight years; a few sacks at nine; a ton and a half at 10, eight tons at 11; 11 tons at 12, and 2 2tons at 13, which is this year. That is one of our oldest plantings, and will give the reader an idea of what is com lng with the 8,000 to 10,000 acres now in walnuts in this district in full bearing, and a large new acreage going but each year.
