In the railway eeeuri- tiea themselves. It waa the induatrial eection which monopolized attention and here the rea son waa entirely clear. The market during the first fortnight of Jnne had had the read justment demanded after the over-pe-ulation of the two pre nous months. The riolent break of Monday week and the neeoodary decline of last, Friday marked the culminating- phases of this reaction. What has occurred aince ia partly in the nature of a fresh sdvance among tareftiliy selected stocks and partly the chsr actritic (harp rebound against an over-ex -ttyided short interest. Petroleum In Lead Mexican Petroleum, as was the .case on the previous o&jp, n um curiiu " mit movement. The sensational up rush continued and had a demoralizing effect upon short eell era in others of the speculative, leaders, Stude baker made a new high, the steel merger atocka -notably Lackawanna and Repubtte Iron and Steel ran up sharply and there was swift motive and Gulf Steel. Copper shares at tracted mors attention, bat in the main there was no short interest to work upon the rise. Strong All Through Today's stock market was Terr strong from tart to finish, and what was equally signifi cant active as prices .went up. During the early part of the session a few of the highly speculative industrials of the type of Mexican Petroleum and Studebaker rather monopo lised the attention. But the ease with which thw leaders rose finally convinced the most skeptical that the general" market had turned, and i nthe afternoon the upward movement spread out all through the list. Ist prices were well op to best, with active buying still in progress. Dividend Aid Great Northern Railway shares did little until well along into the afternoon. Then interest in this Quarter was evidently revived by the announce ment that the directors of the Great North ern railroad had declared a semi-annual divi dend of 3 St per cent, putting the stock on a 1 per cent basis. This action was by no means expected and not only did Great North ern preferred share rush forward rapidly, but active buying was encouraged all through the railway list. The Great Northern board had deferred this dividend when it came up for consideration three months ago on the ground that the concurrent earnings did not warrant the full dividend declaration. The decision of the directors today wsi therefore, taken a important testimony to the improvement, which has occurred in the railway situation since the dose of the winter.
