Cohen ; Oregon potato growers who have been in clined to laugh at the great strides made by Yakima in sales of potatoes in this territory aa -well as in California, would realize at once tliat they must at once check up the defects of their industry. If they will pay a -rait to the wholesale, trade. Good Quality Oregon potatoes are eery sel dom seen in the Portland market in quantity. This is a broad statement ta make bat it is borne out by the facts aa practically all handlers here will attest. Lack of good seed is the biggest reason for Oregon's poor potato crops during the laat few years. A complete change of seed has been necessary for a number of years past. In Yakima and in California, where potatoes are grown in quantities, the seed is selected and changed often. In this state few growers change their seed because it costs them more money to make ne change. They fail to realize that such change will pay them big profits. COTTON GOES TO HIGH MARK OF THE SEASON New York, June 20. There was a further advance of 13 to 4 5 points at the opening of the cotton market Uiday which very nearly realized predictions of 2 So for near snonth cot ton and which established new high records for the season. This .was due to reports of unsettled weather in the South, the continued etrength of Ijverpool and the big Liverpool spot ft'lef. Tlie advance of 22.95 for October, however, making a gain of no leas than 167 points from the low price pf last Thursday, brought out heavy general realising. It waa gradually absorbed on a scale down but was in sufficient volume to send prices some 10 to 15 points below yesterday's closing quota tions, or about 33 to 40 point under the early high levels before the end of the morning. ThU gave the market rather an unsettled ap pearance, but there was buying on a scale down by trailers who thought that, in view of the recent advance large offerings were being well taken. All reports reaching here are emphasizing the presence of the weevil in practically ail -cctions of the belt and it is not unlikely that th present strength of the market is partly due to the discounting of apprehended serious insect damaa-e during the summer. In today's cotton market the predictions of 23c lor near momns cotton were very nearly realized- Both JnLv and October got up to 22.95. Then the fact that the market had gamed no less than 167 points lrom toe low last Thursday induced very heavy profit- taking and prices were carried down for a time rather sharply. Toward the end toe market steadied again and left off with a net gain of 3 to 13 points on the day. Cattle ruled nominally steady, while sheep were slow and weak at further price redactions.
