Tbat Is because be baa never riven up, even etffen there ha seemed to be no hope.' As he crouched tn Baste Bear's cave, watching Towler the Bo Cat at the en .traaoe, Peter knew tbat mach depended on whether or, not Towler would dare enter that cave. He knew Ycrwler for the coward he is ahd he hoped with all his tnight that Towlara fear of Buster Bear would make him afraid to enter, even though he knew that Buster wu not at home, u , ;. v' '' ' 1 The hope in Peter's heart grew as he aaw how Towler hesitated. Several times Towler started to enter and then backed out. Twice -he turned to stare all about him in the moonlight Ills tunny, stub ef a tall twitched with anger and impa tience. Piainty he vu having hard work to gala courage enough to enter , that cave, c'". p,"'': ' - But at last Peter saw a. pew light in thoee fierce - eyes as they onoe more peered Into the cave and he. knew that Towler naa maae np ms mina to enter. The -fact IsYewler could smell Peter in i there and he had. decided 'that U Peter had dared ko tin there there was no rea son why he shouldn't so in.: too It waent as if he - had rot to - sjay , there. He " hadn't a doubt .that he would find and catch Teter within a minute or two. Then he Would carry Peter outside and awer where he need hot i worry about Busbtr Bear. So stealthily be-entered that cave. i ! Peter -was hi despatf. What -should h do? What could he do?; Towler was bound to find bin ft was useless for him to try to get past Towler. It seemed to Peter thai this cm surely jm wouia Iom his lift. And then he remembered btnethlAg. He remembered 'that tn one earner a tinv cave ooened with a narrow entrance from the larger cave, Peter1 waited -no longer. 'With bound he made , for that little cave and Just tn the very nick of time squeezed through that nar row entrance. mm m OLJ: Peter knew that much depended on whether or not Towler would dare w to enter Gbat cave. He was none too soon. At his first movement Towler had . seen him and bounded forward. As be straggled through that narrow entrance Towler'a claws scratched his hind tegs. Peter squealed with pain and fright and Towl er snarled with disappointment. That Qttle cave was very small. It was hardly big enough for Peter to turn around in. Now he crouched Just as far back, In It as be could get. There was need for him to. Towler, after trying in vain to tear away the entrance, had thrust a paw in, a paw with great hooted claws stretched as far out as possible, and was trying to hook then into Peter, Only by flattening himself against the back wall could Peter keep out of reach of, those groring claws. Twe or three times they scratched him and tore little tufts of hair from his coat. Peter was tn the tightest of tight places and he knew it. And oh. how he did long for the dear Old Briar-Patch and wish be had had sense enough to stay there! ,'lf I ever get out of this IH never, never leave the Old Briar-Patch again," sobbed Peter.
