As he crouched tn Baste Bear's cave,
watching Towler the Bo Cat at the en
.traaoe, Peter knew tbat mach depended
on whether or, not Towler would dare
enter that cave. He knew Ycrwler for the
coward he is ahd he hoped with all his
tnight that Towlara fear of Buster Bear
would make him afraid to enter, even
though he knew that Buster wu not at

1 The hope in Peter's heart grew as he
aaw how Towler hesitated. Several times
Towler started to enter and then backed
out. Twice -he turned to stare all about
him in the moonlight Ills tunny, stub

do? What could he do?; Towler was

him to try to get past Towler. It seemed

Peter knew that much depended on
whether or not Towler would dare

He was none too soon. At his first
movement Towler had . seen him and
bounded forward. As be straggled
through that narrow entrance Towler'a
claws scratched his hind tegs. Peter
squealed with pain and fright and Towl
er snarled with disappointment.
That Qttle cave was very small. It was
hardly big enough for Peter to turn
around in. Now he crouched Just as far
back, In It as be could get. There was
need for him to. Towler, after trying in
vain to tear away the entrance, had
thrust a paw in, a paw with great
hooted claws stretched as far out as
possible, and was trying to hook then
into Peter, Only by flattening himself
against the back wall could Peter keep
out of reach of, those groring claws. Twe
or three times they scratched him and
tore little tufts of hair from his coat.
Peter was tn the tightest of tight
places and he knew it. And oh. how he
did long for the dear Old Briar-Patch
and wish be had had sense enough to
stay there!
,'lf I ever get out of this IH never,
never leave the Old Briar-Patch again,"
sobbed Peter.
