New York retailers protested vigorously, today against the charge of the federal trade commission that retail prices were not only not keeping pace with the downward trend of wholesale prices but were being artificially maintained. . " Except In certain Instances, some of the more conspicuous of which have al ready been ited in these dispatches, it must be -said that observations .of the trade upheld these protests, at least Insofar as they Insist upon the fact that 'roost merchants have taken their losses and are 'buying for current de mand, with prices in keeping with those purchase. Unemployment in New York, a. mat ter that is of vital importance to the retailer no less than to the producer, lias been reduced to 150.000 persons, 20 per cent of the normal personnel. A federal survey aa of January 1 found 18.220 at work- in establishments which employed 755,46.1 just a year before. A survey as of April 1, Just completed by the .industrial bureau of the Merchants association, found 605,000 at work In these establishments. This means a reduction of one third in the number idle within the pajt three months. This latest re port lists as the industries in -which the improvement raa comer lumber, wood working and furniture, machinery, auto mobile accessories, metal specialties, furs, shirts, waists, ' dresses and shoes, confectionery and food products, cigar ettes and smoking tobacco, and chemi cals and allied products. May and Jane. 4.75 m 8.50. $30,000,000 Issue Of Goodyear Tire, Eubber Co., on Sale Announcement is made today of the new "J30.000.000, 20-year, 8 per cent first mortgage bonds of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber company. The Issue is secured by an absolute closed mortgage on he entire plant at Akron, Ohio. The amount will be returned by lot at the rate Of $75,000 each semi-annual interest ' date at 120. The bonds will be priced at 99, which will bring a return of 9.10 to those having- the security at the end of the 20-year period. Holders of bonds called within the first year will receive an exceedingly high rate of inter st The net assets of the company are clven at $135,000,000. Net'sales for the fiscal year ending October 31, 1920, were $188,000,000. i ,K A number of the local ' investment houses have participated in the loan. A quick absorption of the issue is anticipated. The free distribution was made in one and fie warehouse, at the W. J. and S. R. K. freiebt station here, and there was a bis nvb for the "spuds." , There were no strings to the offer and it wasn't made to boost business. The firm an nounced that the potato market was ao low that it would rattier give the potatoes to the pnblic than hare to sell them for only 25c a bushel. All tliat the conmimer bad to do was to cart the tuber away. Those, wno couldn't do that were charged for delivery only. PUBLIC IS STILL SEEKING OIL SHARES IN NEW YORK TRADE PETROLEUMS ARE IN HEAVY CALL New York. April 21. (I. N. S.) The stock market closed strong today. In terest in the final trading was centered on Studebaker, which had a sharp run up in hurried short covering to 87 from a morning low of 79. At the ctoee the stock reacted to 85. The ad vance in this issue caused sympathetic strength in other stocks. Crucible, after breaking to 74, rallied to 76. Steel common rallied one point to 81. Re public Steel recovered practically all its early loss, "closing at 60. United States Rubber rose over two points to 72. Moderate rabies were made in the rails.
