RETAILERS FOLLOW
E DECLINES
PR
By James AHerton
flpccUl Correspondent of The Journal
N!vir York, April 21. New York
retailers protested vigorously, today
against the charge of the federal
trade commission that retail prices
were not only not keeping pace with
the downward trend of wholesale
prices but were being artificially
maintained.
. " Except In certain Instances, some of
the more conspicuous of which have al
ready been ited in these dispatches, it
must be -said that observations .of the
trade upheld these protests, at least
Insofar as they Insist upon the fact
that 'roost merchants have taken their
losses and are 'buying for current de
mand, with prices in keeping with those
purchase.
Unemployment in New York, a. mat
ter that is of vital importance to the
retailer no less than to the producer,
lias been reduced to 150.000 persons, 20
per cent of the normal personnel. A
federal survey aa of January 1 found
18.220 at work- in establishments which
employed 755,46.1 just a year before. A
survey as of April 1, Just completed by
the .industrial bureau of the Merchants
association, found 605,000 at work In these
establishments. This means a reduction
of one third in the number idle within
the pajt three months. This latest re
port lists as the industries in -which the
improvement raa comer lumber, wood
working and furniture, machinery, auto
mobile accessories, metal specialties,
furs, shirts, waists, ' dresses and shoes,
confectionery and food products, cigar
ettes and smoking tobacco, and chemi
cals and allied products.
Still . further i improvement Is to be
looked for as building Increases.
