Annual "cleanup" sales In every sec tion of the country are "historically beinar mistaken for a downward movement In: prices." -This was the ' interpretation riven today -by heads of the Manufacturers and Wholesalers association, which this week Is holding a "buyers' week" in Ban Francisco, to the telegraphic dis patches from Eastern trade centers re garding "price reductions." Prices are not coming down, it was emphatically stated. ' PRICES SOARED TS APRIL, SAYS LABOR INVESTIGATOR Washington, May 21. (1. N. S.) Prices - soared during April, according: to a statement Issued today by the bu reau of labor statistics, a general ad vance of nearly 4?4 points In the whole sale pries of Important commodities be ing registered. Fuel and lighting ma terials increased 11 per cent while there was an advance of 9 'per cent in food due to the high prices of sugar and po tatoes. Lumber and building materials went up 5Vi per cent. In only one group, cloth and clothing. was there a ' net decrease in April, as compared with the March price, and that was a decrease of less than 1 per cent due to a decline in raw silk and leather. - . , , i . i ii i . claim they have not overbought as mer chants in other cities. They say to sell now ; would deplete their stocks, forcing them ' to buy on an advancing market) and that consumers will not gain anything In the long run. Cummins law, the commission ordered the roads to deliver freight - by the quickest and'shortest routes. . : In carrying out the request of the ex ecutives, the commission issued a num ber -of orders for each of the lines, di recting the roads to deliver a certain number of 'cars at specified points daily. As these instructions are carried . out the congestion gradually will be relieved and car shortages ended, commission members believed. EMFTT CARS RUSHED ; : Long trains of empty cars are being: rushed across the country to localities where they are needed . to load coal snd grain. Automobiles and luxury commodities are left waiting in . the freight yards. Movement of 80,000 empties Is planned within 30 days.
