Wil son T. Hume and Isaac E. Staples as candidates for the state senate 'from Multnomah qpunty is augured by complete returns from 175 of Multnomah county's 413 precirfbts. Joseph leads the field with a total vote, thus far, of 245. Cellars, Day and Howell are clone at the heels of the five leaders In the con test In the . Thirteenth senatorial dis trict, In which 15 candidates sought the five senate seats available. Joseph's lead, established early In the count, has been maintained steadily ar the count progressed, -while Moser, In - the count of the last' precincts listed, has advanced toward Joseph's total. Is maintaining the lead among candidates for nomination to the state legislature in the Eighteenth repre sentative district, where the completed count in 175 precincts give him a total .vote of 7080. K. K- Kubll has stepped ahead of W. C North in the latest count, and now .occupies fourth place on the ticket, with a total of 6189 votes as compared with 6655 for Barge E. Leonard, who Is run ning second to Wells in the list of 34 candidates, from which 12 are to- he nominated. Hosford jumped -from eixth to third with 6226 votes. Lonergaii has climbed up the list of the 12 favorites In the completed count In 175 precincts, and Alma D. Katz has stepped Into the fourteenth position. Lionergan is a close contender for the place as the count progresses, however. Phelps Is twelfth in the list of favorites. The count of ballots cast for repre sentative "in the Seventeenth district, comprising Multnomah and Clackamas eounty. has been completed in 175 of the precincts in Multnomah county and gives W. R. McDonald of Portland a total of 5244 votes. David E. Lofgren. who held very close to McDonald's count In the early returns, has dropped back and in 175 precincts is given a total of 4953 votes. Crans of Clackamas county is running a' slow third in Multnomah county returns and thus far has received 2105 votes. McArthur, judging from the continuing- drift of , the voting as shown , from the complete : returns from 175 precincts of the district, Multnomah county, has won the' Re publican ; nomination for congress. Qn the same basis it seems more thin probable that Dr.. Esther Pohl-Love'Joy has defeated Mrs. ""Alexander Thompson for , the Democratic nomination for the same office, . ' - ' ; In the First district W. C. Hawley has no opposition and Is the? Republican nominee for that district, while in the Second district Sinnott is leading Jones nearly six to one. " In the ! Republican Multnomah' con- s-ressional battle McArthur has 6932 votes so far tabulated to his creditv. while Sweeney has 4903 and Smith 3308, giving McArthur a lead in the 175 pre cincts completely counted of 2024.. On the ' Democratic side of the battle line. Dr. iLovejoy has 2165 votes in ' her favor as against 1686 cast for Mrs. Thompson in the 175 precincts Of 1 the district. This gives Dr. Lovejoy a lead, so far counted, of 479. f Incomplete returns from three coun ties of the Second congressional district give Sinnott 605, Jones 181 and Graham, the Democratic candidate, 8 votes. Peace Is So Severe That Abdication of Sultan May Result ;. )'.. .:: i . , . Constantinople, Turkey, May 22. As expected, the peace terms produced deep depression here. At a meeting in the sultan's palace it was suggested that in case the powers did not modify their de cisions in regard to Thrace and Smyrna the saltan and the imperial family would abdicate, leaving the Mussulmans with out a caliph for the first -time in his tory. It 1 is hoped to stir up all the Mussulmans in the' British empire and thus compel Britain to modify the terms. Voters in affirmative mood passed favorably upon all measures of ;the special state election ballot, Friday, Judging by the complete count of 175 Multnomah- county precincts and in complete returns from 26 Oregon counties outside Multnomah ; county. Even the doubtfully popular capital punishment biil shows a majority ' ap proaching 3000, and the majority in favor of thjB measure providing for the successor to an incapacitated governor has a lead of more than 4000. ; The vote on the elementary school tax bill is heaviest as the count progresses, but the blind school measure continues to have the largest majority. There seems to be no further room for doubt that all the measures have' car ried. The bandits escaped in an automobile. Posses trailed them towards Des Moines. Reasnor is about 40 miles east of Des- Moinea Kozer Maintains an Easy Lead in Race For State Secretary Kozer maintains an easy lead for sec retary f state in the total returns from 20 counties of the state, incomplete, in cluding 175 Multnomah county precincts, his vote being 7842. with Lockley in second place with 4527. Schulderman is back in third with 3774, ' and Jones fourth with 3437. Wood 3035, Parsons 2840 and Cobuxn 1632, finish in the order McCamant and Olson, MacDonald, Carey Lead for Delegates Wallace McCamant leads the field. May 22. Despond ent apparently because her husband had been take nto Steilacoom to the asylum three weeks ago, Mrs. Caroline Winkler, living about eight miles north east of Waahougal,; committed , suicide Friday by drowning. When she failed to return Friday evening her son and daughter sought for her, finding her body into the river.' : Mrs. Winkler had ' removed her shoes and thrown herself into deep water but the body had drifted into shallow water and her children saw her hair floating on the surface. She was 68 years, old and left five children, two of them small. G. 0. P. REFUSES TO ACT ON H. C.L.BILLS Washington, May 22. (U. P.) Senate Republicans in caucus today refused to take any action regard ing bills to reduce the high, cost of living, measures to regulate the meat packers, soldier bonus and other important legislation. Consideration of j these measures be fore any recess for the political conven tions was urg-i! by : Senator Kenyon and others. The caucus decided that appropria tion bills and conference reports will be given preference in . the senate. The house rules committee today de cided by a party vote of 8 to 4 to' make an effort to call up the sofifier bonus bill next Tuesday or Wednesday.
