THE OREGON - DAILY JOURNAL; PORTLAND. TUESDAY. OCTOBER : 21. 1819. ALBiNA FERRY TO The matter of policing the bridges was reierrea to District Attorney Brans for decision and to Sheriff Hurlburt for drafting of regulations. "V i Tip Top Inn Bakery-Perf ect Bread, RclU and Pastry, Electrically Baked BEWSMED County Commissioners Decide to Move the Craft Below Present '-. Operating Point BRIDGE TRAFFIC DISCUSSED Recommendation Made That Dep uty Sheriffs Guard Morrison and Burnside Spans. That the Albina. feme will be given a new river crossing below Its pres ent location. In order that Its useful ness may not be counteracted by the Broadway-bridge, was. the tentative decision of the county commission ers at their meeting; Monday. - A committee to investigate new loca tions for the slips, consisting of Chris Minslnger. J. V. Beach. Henry Baren drlck and A. W. Barendrlck, was named to consult with C. B. Hegardt, engineer of the commission of fftibllc docks. The coanmittee will report back Wednesday. Cable to guide the ferry will not be used because of Interference with river traffic. It is likely, therefore, that the lower Albina ferry boat will be used, the upper ferry boat going to St. Johns, the boat now in use there being in bad condition. . The Albina ferry landing at the north end of he Fifteenth street municipal terminal cannot be used because the Port of Portland intends building a dock there. The south end of Montgomery dock No. 2 has been suggested as the most desirable site for a new ferry land ing on the east side. , The question of traffic regulation oh the bridges was taken up by Lieutenant H. A. Lewis of 'the city police depart ment The 1919 motor vehicle law, Lieutenant Lewis said, apparently gave the commission authority to police the bridges and regulate traffic Instead of the city. He recommended placing deputy sher iffs -at each approach of the Burnside and Morrison" bridges to see that no trucks of more than two tons capacity crossed, that streets run not closer than 100 feet, and that when cars were awaiting the draws, they Should not be spaced closer than one car to a span.
