YOUNG BOYS ARE ACCUSERS m jakes Advantage of Permission to Put Automobile in Garage, Speeding Away From Officer. Arrested by the police on a serious Statutory charge. Victor J. McCone, former secretary of the state Socialist party, committed suicide Wednesday nl-ht by driving his automobile off the Fell wood ferry slip and Into the Wil lamette river. The body was recovered, but the machine now lies in the river. " McCone, who resided at 1669 East Six teenth street, had been placed under ar rest by Patrolman R. C. Brown on the complaint of a number of young boys of the Sellwood district. At the time McCone had his machine with him and j the officer was In another machine. nn-Qivint iwuiiiDivu . " - mobile to a garage in Sellwood before going to Jail. McCone started out, with Brown following in his machine. On reaching Sellwood McCone dashed way, driving straight for the ferry slip. Brown followed, but was unable to stop the prisoner. Both driver and machine went into the river. McCone resided with his wife and two children at 1669 East Sixteenth street and for a number of years had been prominent In local Socialistic circles. About a year ago he resigned as statt secretary of the party and at the time f his death was editor of a paper pub lished by the Columbia River Ship building company. According to eyewitnesses, McCone drove down the ferry slip at a rate of about 60 miles an hour. The momen tum carried the machine out Into the river about 100 feet from the ferry slip. Patrolman Brown was about Cf feet behind McCone at the time the suicide struck the slip. He Immediately noti fied Police Captain Inskeep, who dis patched the harbor patrol and Motor Cycle Officer Norene to the scene. The body was recovered toy members of the harbor patrol and turned over U the coroner. It la not known at pres ent whether or not an Inquest will be held. For several days past complaints have been reaching the police concerning a man who has been molesting boys in the Sellwood district. Patrolman Brown, who has that beat, was detailed to Investigate, and driving Up In his own machine, dressed In plain , clothes, caught McCone In the act of committing a felony. Kenneth Davidson, a business associ ate of McCone, claims that the death was accidental ; that McCone became confused, and was unable to handle the car on the steep grade leading; to the ferry. Tillamook County Boy Slain in War Dallas. Nov. 21. Word was received In this city yesterday that Cecil Getchell. a former Dallas boy. was ' killed In action In France on October 2. He was killed the first day of the first battle in which he engaged. Getchell was 28 years old, and was drawn In the draft from Tillamook county last spring and assigned to a regiment at Camp Kear ney. Cal., going overseas in June. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Florence Oetchell. postmistress at Hebo. Tllla- rnook county, and several brothers, one of whom. Clyde Oetchell, resides In this city.
