Movement and offerings of millfeeda show an increase but values are firmly held at prices printed in this report. ALL OVER COUNTRY AT MOMENT BEAN MARKET GOES EXTREMELY SLOW IN THE LEADING CENTERS California Trying to Sell and for That Reason Quotes High Recent Advance in the Price More Than Lost Demand Is Stagnant. Instead of showing strength as some Cali fornia interests indicate, because they are try ing to -sell, the beaa market Is actually allow ing depression with, lower prices quoted In moat centera where bids at all are obtainable. The local buying price for rsclesned Lady Washington beans in Iota here at this time is 7 m 7 e a pound f . o. b. To dste this sea son approximately 10 cars of beans have been chipped from this atate. termers are now more inclined to offer their supplies because they have found that while they were freely offered IH a pound at the start of the season the demand has been ebbing since then and values have declined as they held. similar weakness is shown in practically every bean market of the country. While several weeks ago Were was a small spurt in the de mand for beans at eastern centers because the government allowed canncrs to resume opera tions aunng November. Oecember and Janu ary, the Mc per pound gained at that time has been more than lost since. In fact, at this time it is extremely hard to find buyers for beans in the eastern markets. One of the big eastern buyers wired a local Ann that the mar ket there lost more than lta recent advance and at this time there is scarcely any demand in sunt. Another wired that the market was very quiet with no demand from any source at the moment. This firm stated that owing to the prevailing conditions it was even unable to make a bid for supplies of Oregon stock. Erratic Tone Is Shown for Shares In N. Y. Trading - New York. Nov. 21. (L N. 8.) The stock market showed a quiet tone at the opening to day with only moderate changes in those issues in which t&ere have recently been disturbances. There waa good buying of Tobacco Products, which carried the price fip. Vtah was a weak feature and dropped. After the quiet trading of the first 16 min utes, a stronger tone developed in many of the important stocks and good upturns were re corded. Steel, industrials were strong. Mex ican Petroleum swung over s wide range, droj ping and then advancing. The railroad stocks were in good demand. Corn Products was also active and moved up. Following the announcement after the meet ing of the directors of the International Mer cantile Marine company today that no action had been taken on the sale of its British ton nage, the preferred stock was poured on the market and broke badly to 1 06 V4 . a loss of 6 points from the morning high. It later rallied to 107. The common dropped from 27 H to 25 H. Furnished by Overbeck & Cooks Co., Board of Trade building: DESCRIPTION : Open High I Low Close Alaska Gold Am. Beet Sugar . . . Am. Denies Statement Government Is Nw Building Ships Under Old Arrangement CONTRACT METHOD IS USED Ships Either Built on Straight Fixed Contract or by Tonnage Cost in Case of Steel Ships. Positive denial of statements unof ficially made from time to time that the 10 per cent plus cost plan la still being- applied to shipyards in the Ore aon district, waa today made by J. W. Hall, assistant supervisor of the wooden shipbuilding program in district No. 11 The rumor had gone out that aomo of the plants in this uistrlct were working under the plus cost method, and that recently a large number of shipyard employes were let out In order to reduce the expense which eventually would have to be paid by the government. Mr. Hall said: "Not a single ship is being built in this district on ploa cost plan, notwithstanding statements to the contrary. Of course the gov ernment reserves the right to plaoe limit on the number of men employed at the yards. But this restriction Is put into effect at this time In order to meet changed conditions. There was a time when speed In construction was the main Idea, but now conditions have been altered materially. Efficiency is now the watchword." It is stated that the vessels in the Oregon district, both wood and steel, are being constructed on either the fixed contract method, which applies to the wooden craft, or the tonnage cost as applied to the steel ships. In cases where tha government, requires extra work of the builders additional compensation Is allowed them. SALMON SHIPS ADRIFT Star of England Breaks From Tow boat Off Oregon Coast.
