Arrested by the police on a serious
Statutory charge. Victor J. McCone,
former secretary of the state Socialist
party, committed suicide Wednesday
nl-ht by driving his automobile off the
Fell wood ferry slip and Into the Wil
lamette river. The body was recovered,
but the machine now lies in the river.
" McCone, who resided at 1669 East Six

complaint of a number of young boys
of the Sellwood district. At the time
McCone had his machine with him and j

mobile to a garage in Sellwood before
going to Jail. McCone started out, with
Brown following in his machine.
On reaching Sellwood McCone dashed
way, driving straight for the ferry slip.
Brown followed, but was unable to stop
the prisoner. Both driver and machine
went into the river.
McCone resided with his wife and two
children at 1669 East Sixteenth street
and for a number of years had been
prominent In local Socialistic circles.
About a year ago he resigned as statt
secretary of the party and at the time
f his death was editor of a paper pub
lished by the Columbia River Ship
building company.
According to eyewitnesses, McCone
drove down the ferry slip at a rate of
about 60 miles an hour. The momen
tum carried the machine out Into the
river about 100 feet from the ferry slip.
Patrolman Brown was about Cf feet
behind McCone at the time the suicide
struck the slip. He Immediately noti
fied Police Captain Inskeep, who dis
patched the harbor patrol and Motor
Cycle Officer Norene to the scene.
The body was recovered toy members
of the harbor patrol and turned over U
the coroner. It la not known at pres
ent whether or not an Inquest will be
held.
For several days past complaints have
been reaching the police concerning a
man who has been molesting boys in the
Sellwood district.
Patrolman Brown, who has that beat,
was detailed to Investigate, and driving
Up In his own machine, dressed In plain
, clothes, caught McCone In the act of
committing a felony.
Kenneth Davidson, a business associ
ate of McCone, claims that the death
was accidental ; that McCone became
confused, and was unable to handle the
car on the steep grade leading; to the
ferry.
