Feb. 20. (I. If. 8.) The dis turbing Russian new capsed a weak tone at th opening of th stock market today, initial -prices showing loss of fractions to more than 1 point. Steel common declined to 964 and Bethlehem Steel B yielded to 80. Baldwin I,ocomoUve. after selling at 79, dropped H. Marin preferred waa active and dropped 1 14 to 984. AUsntle Gulf fell hi to 117. The railroad stocks were weak, Reading drop ping 1 to 77 and Union Pacific declining 4 to 119. General motors was tinder pressure and fell 8 point to 129 hi. Distillers' was off at 89 H and Central Leather lost to 71 . There was a good deal of irregularity during the forenoon. Selling waa pronounced during the first hour, when losses of 1 to S points were sus tained by leading issues, but, following these declines, there wa a brisk demand. Baldwin I-oeomotive gained 3 points from it low to 8114. but then dropped to 7 8', 4. Most of the other steel industrials moved in about the same way. The announcement of an Increased dividend on National Enamel caused an advance of 1 in that Issue to 48. Cuba Cane Sugar moved up 1 point to 88. Marine preferred de clined to 98, then moved up to 100. fol lowed by another reaction of about 1 point. Th copper stocks became heavy late in the forenoon. The railroad issues were weak at declines of about 1 point. Liberty 4s .were strong, advancing to 98.16, while th 8s declined to 97.22. After the first 15 minnte of business, how ever, recoveries were in order, with many stocks selling higher, then yesterday's closing prices. Baldwin rose to 81. and Steel common rallied to above 97. Marine preferred sold up lo 100 and General Motors rallied 2 points from the lew.
