New Tork. Feb. 20. (I. If. 8.) The dis
turbing Russian new capsed a weak tone at th
opening of th stock market today, initial -prices
showing loss of fractions to more than 1 point.
Steel common declined to 964 and
Bethlehem Steel B yielded to 80. Baldwin
I,ocomoUve. after selling at 79, dropped H.
Marin preferred waa active and dropped 1 14
to 984. AUsntle Gulf fell hi to 117.
The railroad stocks were weak, Reading drop
ping 1 to 77 and Union Pacific declining 4 to
119.
General motors was tinder pressure and fell
8 point to 129 hi. Distillers' was off at
89 H and Central Leather lost to 71 .
There was a good deal of irregularity during
the forenoon. Selling waa pronounced during the
first hour, when losses of 1 to S points were sus
tained by leading issues, but, following these
declines, there wa a brisk demand. Baldwin
I-oeomotive gained 3 points from it low to
8114. but then dropped to 7 8', 4. Most of
the other steel industrials moved in about the
same way.
The announcement of an Increased dividend
on National Enamel caused an advance of 1
in that Issue to 48. Cuba Cane Sugar
moved up 1 point to 88. Marine preferred de
clined to 98, then moved up to 100. fol
lowed by another reaction of about 1 point.
Th copper stocks became heavy late in the
forenoon. The railroad issues were weak at
declines of about 1 point.
Liberty 4s .were strong, advancing to 98.16,
while th 8s declined to 97.22.
After the first 15 minnte of business, how
ever, recoveries were in order, with many stocks
selling higher, then yesterday's closing prices.
Baldwin rose to 81. and Steel common rallied
to above 97. Marine preferred sold up lo 100
and General Motors rallied 2 points from the
lew.

ton during the last few days. The freight rate
on potatoes from Yakima pointa to Texas is ex
actly tn asm a from th Willamatt valley,
therefore buyers are not inclined to pay more for
supplies her than at competitive point.
Local potato market continue to reflect ex
treme weakness. Although some of the whole
salers are quoting out a high as 81.60 1.60 for
supplies here, th bulk of the- limited sale along
tn (trees are oeing made around 81.10 1.25
to retailer.

were the highest in recent years at the opening
of the market her today, a rensral rush of
buying that found offerings light, sending the
March to 92c and May to Dei ore tne ad
vance wa checked. There waa soma profit tak
ing in evidence on the extreme bulge, and a sharp
reaction followed. Tn marxet was very active
and fluctuated rapidly.
Strength ia oat waa th dominating influence
ir. corn and scattered buying made a small ad
vance, sending May corn to $1.27. a new high
level for th season.
Higher price for nog at the yards and
smaller receipts than had been expected, coupled
with strength in the grains, mad a higher level
of value in th provisions market . There was
re oder ta commission house buying and realising
sales from longs appeared on the upturn.

The message from Washington statin that
Portland ha been mad the basic price point
for the 1918 wheat crop of the Pacific North
west meets with general favor among producers
as well a dealers end millers. Tha exact price
for the year is sot yet fully established by the
government, but will be not less then $2, and
some feel that a 82.50 price will be named at
primary point. This meansthat Chicago would
