the guests of the Knights of Colum- j
bus and the local Catholic clergy,
headed by Archbishop Christie. I
Bishop McClosky, who was vicar !
general under Bight Rev. Bishop D.
J. Dougherty in the Philippines for,
10 years, is returning to the . islands. ;
among friends. His former rolnistra-
tlons in the new possessions of the
United States are declared to have
had a marked effect upon the na
tives and his service under Bishop
Dougherty, one, of the most prominent
Catholic bishops of the country, has
gained him a wide reputation.
Glad to Be turn to Islands
"I am returning to the islands to
continue the work of uplifting the
people in spiritual ways," said Bishop
McClosky. "My former work there
was most pleasant, and I am glad to
have the opportunity to get back. The
native Filipinos are eager for educa
tion. Borne of the wealthy class are
graduates from leading colleges and
universities of the United States and
Europe. Their parents, realising the
benefits of an education, are sparing
no efforts to accomplish their pur
pose. Most of the natives attending
school are students of the institutions
in the islands.
"In the islands 90 per cent of the
natives are followers of the Catholic
religion. There are 70 or 80 parishes

Railroad Ordered to
Build New Highway
Salem, Or., July 21. The public
service commission today ordered the
Willamette Pacific Railroad company
to build for Lane county a new county
road to take the place of the county
highway appropriated by tht railroad
when it built its line from Eugene to
Marshfield. The highway Is to be
built on the north bank of the Siuslaw
river. The railroad company Is given
four months within which to com
plete the road. The surface of the
road is to be eight feet wide.

Dies at Asylum
USalem, Or.. July 21. After spending
47 years as an inmate of the Oregon!
State hospital for the insane, Joshua
Kllenberger died at the institution to
day. He was 7s years old. He was
committed from Multnomah county
and had no known relatives or friends.

The matter of sending coast dele
gates to Washington to attend a simi
lar conference, called by the depart
ment of labor and commerce, will be
taken up, and It is probablt. that ar
rangements will be made to have the
coast- represented. The Washington
conference was postponed several
weeks ago to give the Pacific coast
shipping interests time to arrange to
send delegates.

Logging Train in Southern
Oregon Runs Away When
Brakes Fail to Work.

that he had lost control of a logging
train on a down grade Engineer Denver
Marsh pushed Fireman Charles
Schumpf from the engine of a BollH .
logging road train Friday night and
saved 8chumpfs life.
A few seconds later Marsh was
frlghtfuly crushed beneath the engine,
when It leaped from the track on a
curve. He died a few hour later. : He
was IS years old, the support Of his
old parents.
8chumpf suffered broken legs and
minor Injuries. The engine, a new one
was scrapped.
The brakes failed and the train
gained speed rapidly until it jutnpod
the track.

Killed In Auto Accident

One man was killed and two others in
jured early today when a seven-passenger
automobile ran into a ditch
near "Brighton, 20 miles north of here.

Chicago, was thrown violently from
the machine and almost instantly
killed.

drag saws which, operated by two
men, will cut three cords of wood an
hour, or 30 cords, in . ordinarily fair
timber; in a day of 10 hours. This
means 780 cords in a month of S
10-hour days, and at $1.25 a cord, the
price now paid for outting, the
month's work would amount to $976.
But if It required three men to do
this work, their earnings would
amount to $325 each per month. Sub
tract from this the cost of their food,

Within 30 to 40 days the Hesse-
Martin Iron works, now at East Sev
enth and Belmont streets, will re
move to th company's new and larger
buildings occupying an entire block
of ground at East Ninth and Taylor
streets. The foundry will be 80x100
feet and the machine shop the same
size. The blacksmith shop building
will be separate from these, as will
also tne on ice.
"Our business ha. doubled within
the last 16 months," reports R. M.
Hoffman, sales manager of the con
cern, "and we are anxious to get 1
into our new quarters, our plant has
been carefully designed to be per
fectly modern, and will be an im
provement over our present outfit. In
our new home we will be prepared
to take care of our orders more ex
peditiously will be enabled to turn
them out with the least possible de
lay."
Daniel Martin is president of the
company, Fred Hesse manager, and
Mr. Hoffman has charge of the sales
department.
