The trip started with the Idea of Retting a little anew experience hut none had any idea of what . he was in for. Tuesday a light snow fell here but before the Reo Six reached th Sandy a new fall was making the going harder until when Aschofrs was reached the car had "the hardest part of the Journey before It through 10 Inches of new snow. Wallace was driving and when Mln einger'a flats were reached a chain" -ame off the wheel andfOr a few tnlnloue ending to the Journey. The End of the Bm . -. About half a mile beyond It reached me Jimiin OI un fnaeavqns, mr lucre the snow was banked four feet deep rand mountaineers who had been up nd down the trail to Government Camp declared that the enow the re mainder of the way ranged from six to nine feet in depth. This lata fall was most unexpected and one or two who had covetous eyes on the fox & Pridmoro trophy will have to delay their endeavors some weeks. ' The Reo party spent some time in exploring the surrounding country un der the belief that the snowstorm was over. At night tne sKy was clear and to stay there seemed to have no particular dangers. But. before mid night the storm broke a second time and in the next few hours six more Inches of snow fell swirling and driv ing in huge drifts that threatened to en an If the car and party. The discovery necessitated an early start and about 4 a. m. the return over the Marmot road was begun. The mow piled up in front until the ra diator, fenders and hood were a mov . ing unow pile and th wheels were great disks of snow that kept get ttng "larger as they rolled over the wet snow. It was hard going and first and second gears were used most of the time. ; That was bad enough and when the bridge at Brlghtwood was crossed better things seemed to be in store for the snow seemed lighter and the great trees protected the road. Once out of the hollow again, and well up on the hog back, the snow became deeper and for a second time the party wax threatened with a cold camp, miles from home and wi&h more snow falling. Sato Another Snowstorm. . For more than a mile. Gruelich at the wheel, backed up, snorted 'er up and piled into the deep white banks The dawn brought out a wonderful TJture, with the deep valleys of the Sandy and the Bull Run on either elde, coming into detail in the blue gray of a snowy daybreak. But it "held the attention of the travelers only a short spell, for the great black clouds to the south soon brought more snow, so blinding that in one instance the car was driven straight into a fence. Bull Run offered an escape for some of the party who wanted to get home In a hurry, so tne Reo was driven, down the hill to the river where not a speck of snow waa to ha found. Residents there could hardly believe that less than three miles up on the grade the car could have amassed all the snow that still hunt on wherever a projection rave It an opportunity. , Qruelich stayed with the ear and went back up on the hill and thence towards Portland. His experiences the rest of the day were a repetition of what had happened in the early hours of the morning. The Reo even had to fight its way down the steep grades and at 9 o'clock that night, after .a rather devious journey to out of the .way places, Qruelich tied up in, Portland. fmm'mmm't mi li in mtmmmmimmmiy, nn """4 ""1. , s -Mtx PROGRAM JS UNDER WAY' Covering This Tear and Vest a Total of 894 Ides Kay Be Built; red. era! PORTLAND MOTOR CAR CO. ORGANIZED HERE TO HANDLE PACKARD Packard Motor Cars and Idaho will be able to take advan tage of the federal aid law this season. A tentative program of construction covering this vear and next year is being arranged. It embraces a total mileafe Of 294 miles. For the two years work there will be avalalable $410,010 federal money. The state and conutres interested will more than match this by adding 173 j,' 000 making a grand total of 1,145,000 Boads in Vatlonal Forests. Of the federal money $135,000 will be expended on roods within and with out national forerts and 275,000 on Dost roads. Instead of distributing the post road money in dribleta it practically has i been decided to concentrate it on two ! main roads, the North and South hig i- way from Moscow to Welser and tho Idaho-Montana highway from Chains ito Noble. On the North and South highway It is planned to Improve 80 miles at a cost of 1400.000 distributed as fol lows: County, ISO.OOO: state, J20 . 000: federal government, 1150,000. The improvement is to be made between Grangevllle and New Meadows. 81 MUe Idaho-Montana. On the Idaho-Montana highway the plan Is to improve an 81-mile stretch between Challis and Noble at & total cost of $340,000 of which the county will contribute $116,000: the state $100,000 and the federal government $125,000. The money raised by the counties and state for cooperation with torer.t service money will be expended on four projecA covering a mileage of 133 miles. One of these is In the Coeur d'Aleno region in Kootenai county where 21 miles axe to be Improved at an esti mated cost of $180,000. Of this amount the county contributes $65,000, the state $65,000 and the government $5V 000. Stretch Toward Tellowstoas. Another project is the 47-mile stretch between Rexburg and Ashton, a link. Walker, manager of the local Fisk Rubber company. "By knowing the weight of your car when loaded ready to run, the motorist is in a position to regulate his tires so that they not only act as the best s to come from over or under inflation, "With the weight of the car known, when preparing for a trip which in cludes passengers it Is very easy for the motorist to regulate his air pres sure in the tires so that they will run with the least injury to them selves. This foresight will also pre vent a break in the side walls caused by an overload or avoid such a high pressure on the tires that they migtit cause injury to the car by not ab sorbing the road shocks. "With the weight of your car, plus the weight of gasoline, water and extra tires, with the : weight of the passengers added, you have the total running weight of your car. "For a quick way to determine what air pressure you will parry In your tires, if you have no regular table of information, the following table is suggested: "For three Inch tires, divide the weight of the load by 32. "For three arid one-haif Inch tires, divide the weight by 40. "For a four inch tire, divide, the weight of the load by 48. "For a four and one-half Inch tire divide the weight of the load by 56. "For a five inch tire, divide the weight of the load by 64. "For a five and one-half Inch tire, divide the weight of the load by 72. "To further illustrate the working out of the above table, suppose your car weighed 2880 pounds and you ere using four inch tires. From the above wefind that for four Inch tires the weight of the load should be di vided by 48. This will give you 60 pounds air 'pressure which should be carried In your tires. The tirjs mile age will be greatly increased if the notorlst will regulate his air pres sure by. the load he carries."
