Every available acre of ground was planted , to cereals this season. The percentage of . yield even on stubble will.be high. -There is much 40 to 60 bushel wheat land in this section. Wa recent rains are credited with tne splendid show trig:,' conditions prior to the showers being less encouraging. Barley acreage shows a 'decided de crease, it having- been proved in recent years that . wheat and oats grow to much better advantage than barley, in this section, and demand for them is in good shape. . - The hay crop is good.. The long ab sence of his name from the news -while vast events have been 'occur-1 ring in the eastern theatre of war suggests that perhaps there is truth- "in the reports from -Russia that Field Marshal von Hindenburg has fallen T into disfavor, it is improbable, how- . ever, that tho-cause is the 'enormous -losses his armies suffered, as the reports allege. Since the -war began, -German lead ers nowhere have spared lives and von Hlndenburg has merely followed precedent in this respect. If he is no longer in favor in the .kaiser's councils, it is probably due to his fruitless efforts to capture Warsaw, coupled with the absolute fearlessness ;pf his, criticism. At, the outbreak of the war. Von Hlndenburg went into retirement partly because off. his comments upon the: military genius of the kaiser. It would be In - keeping with his character If he explained certain de feats ; both In the east and west in words which would not be appreciated ' by the kaiser. Iff Von Hindgnbdrg continues to hold th full confidence of the emperor, it is difficult to understand why Field Marshal von Mackeqsen, Von Hinden- Durgs. suooramaie, snouta have been entrusted with ' the direction ot ' the tSalician .campaign. Von Mackensen's election was a particular ilow to Von tHlndenbu r g's pres ti g e, because t he ul timate objective of the Galician drive -la now being ' revealed as an t attack on ; Warsaw; from the southeast.- This Is the only- available direction from which Von Hindenburg did not try to attack ' the Polish capital. After Lemberg, Von Mackensen was made a field marshal and given equal rank with Von Hindenburg. -The title s failed to carry him forward, however, Just as it failed to carry &ron Hlnden burg forward. . Von Mackensen is. now encountering the same characteristic -sudden recovery of th Russian power of defense which' Von Hlndenburg was 'unable to overcome. - The result may cause Von Hindenburg's eventual res toration to favor, unless Von Macken sen captures Warsaw. If ; that - im probability occurs. Von Hindenburg's subordination will perhaps be perma nent. ' ' . WINE MEN AGAINST TAX . San - Francisco, . Cal., July 13. (TJ. jp,) Vigorous protests, against the government war tax on sweet 'wines were made' today at the. Loveland, Colo., July IS. ti. N. S.) Frank Peak, night watchman- was .shot and killed here early today by three men. supposedly partially, intoxicated.- Several bottles of beer were -? found near the spot where Peak was killed. : The murderers escaped. DAHO PROMISES BEST CROP LUMBERING INDUSTRIES Burned Waterfront Mill Opposes Plan 4 ACTION IS DISPLEASING TO THE OWNERS S. B. Cobb, secretary of the Standard Box & Lumber Co.. stated this morn ing that the - company will not rebutia the mill at the. foot of East Alder, street, which was destroyed by rirea. few weeks ago. ''The plant willjiot be rebuilt, he gays, because toe civ wu i permit it- "I took the matter up with the build ing inspector's office, explained Mr, Cobb this morning, 'and was informed mat the city of i'ortiana oojocae w having sawmills located on the water front within the city limits; that if one of the mills now so located is destroyed, that will mean the end of H as an industry in the city. "The company owns three blocks of ground that formed the site for the old; mill, including the waterfrontage, and certainly we would rebuild if per mitted -to do so; and it would be a better and larger plant than the one destroyed. It would mean the s tea ay employment i f about 300 men In the manufacture of ; lumber and lumber products. "The reason given for refusing a permit. I suppose, is that Portland wants to become a great shipping port and the waterfront is wanted for docks and warehouses. But Z . don't think this will be accomplished if manufac turing plants are driven out. The lum ber industry is ; looked upon as tne state's greatest asset, but apparently the city does not want the 'industry to flourish within its limits." The old mill cut about "100,000 feet of lumber daily, and much of it was shipped by water to California. For the present, the company is handling Its business from the new mill built about a year ago at Scofield, on the Tillamook branch of the Southern Pa cific. . The fire that destroyed the Standard Rnir - T .umber Go 's Dlant also Put out of business the Acme Planing mill near the' foot of East Oak street. No an nouncement has yet been made as o whether or not it will be rebuilt, NEW OUTLET FOR LUMBER ; . , , v; - - . - Quebec Awaits First Cargo From Portland With Interest. VWIthin the next few days the San Francisco owned barkentine John C Meyer is due to arrive from Portland. Or., with the first cargo of Douglas fir and other Pacific coast lumber ever brought here direct," writesjthe Quebec correspondent of the American Lumberman of Chicago. This should gfis be interesting news to ttte uniteq Ltes lumber trade, . for it is oenevea local lumber circles that the voyage of the John C. Meyer is the forerunner of a large commerce, between the east ern Canadian provinces and the lum ber manufacturers of the west coast. While lumber ia one of the principal products and exports of this section, the domestic market can not supply the large sized and extra strong struc tural timbers such as are offered by the United States producers of long leaf yellow pine and Douglas fir. Lum ber which might answer the require ments for factory and mill construc tion i nrnrinnert in the forests of the Canadian southwest, but the high cost of railroad transportation, or the longer carriage if transported by water, gives the United States lumber producers a strong auvaia. Th harkentin sailed from Port land, Or., April S. and took two months and a day for the voyage to Balboa, r 7 ' vhsr its arrival -was hailed in shipping circles as an achievement of some momenL a-ccoruiuis i uioiiii;iio ins received nere. consiaering- ; me uTifavnra rtl wiather. conditions ana heavy load of tne barkentine. From Colon to Quebec is expected to take aoout live weeas, so mat me voyage will run to nearly 100 days. Arming fn Y Hnm th John H. Meyer would probably have taken 150 days -"--- - he" vessel is 200 feet long by 40 1n the beam, and carries a crew of 13. Tt csnsi rolls were $992.50. and a charge of $160 was made 'or towage. I bringing its total canal bill to $1142.50 This expense prorated among the. oo i days saved is equivalent Xo a charge : of $22.85 a day. In other words, if ! the vessel's operating expenses are I not less than $22.85 per day she shoula ) "break even" on the use of the Pan t ama canal for this voyage. In.addi tion to possible saving in the actual I. daily operating expenses the operators will gain oy -ni mui wear and tear on the sails and rigging, which is a considerable item for 'a large ship in a voyage around the Horn and by being able to discharge cargo and ship another in approxi mately a third less time than had the vessel been traveling over the longer route another saving will be made. This last Is a very important item, es pecially in -view of the prevailing high prices for charters." TO TOW THREE LOG RAFTS Each Raft to Hold 5,000,000 Feet of Lumber. The Benson Lumber company of San Diego, Cal., through its president, Frank Lynch, has announced the clos ing of a contract with the Merchants & Shipowners" Tug Boat company of San Francisco for the, use Of the tug Hercules this summer. - This tug is to tow three log : rafts from Wallace slough on the Columbia river to San 13d ego for the Benson Lumber com pany, the first raft being expected to reach San Diego this week. . It was taken to sea last week. - President Lynch Btated that the Benson company expects i to continue and extend the pole department that was established last year. With this end in view several thousand cedar tmvTba will be brouaht down on the log rafts as deck loads. These poles are to be used in telephone and power transmission work throughout south ern California. ' x. ' - i Interesting facts aoouf the Benson log rafts are as follows: Each raft is cigar shaped and it takes 200 tons of chain to bind them together. Each raft contains c approximately 5,000,000 feet of logs, or enough, lum ber to build completely 200 eight room houses. Each raft la about 800 feet long. Each raft draws over 28 feet of water, or as mucn as tne largest trans orpanio liners. Each raft carries a, deckload of 3000 cedar Doles, or enough to build a power line five miles.? It takes 12 men three months to build one raft. It takes two weeks to tow the rafts from the Columbia river to San IDego, a distance Of over 1200 -miles. It takes about three months to saw aarh raft into; lumber In tha Rpnson sawmill In San Diego by over, 100 citl- zens Of ssan uiego. SEES - NEED FOR LUMBER - i , Belgian Dealer Predicts Great Activity After -War. G: OKberg, .the Belgian lumber dealer of Brusse's. who was in Portland last week studying- the lumber situation, believes that immediately - after the war is over1 all off Euorpe 'Will begin to rebuild and make extensive new im provements. That he may know the class "of material available here, lie came to the . coast. - : At a dinner at the Chamber off Com merce he - explained that the people here have only a. very faint idea of what damage has been wrought by the war. Towns after town he said have been laid in ruins, and railroad bridges and ' tracks. ' have been 'destroyed or worn - out While steel a&d concrete will be nsed extensively in rebuilding, he said, the amount of lumber r.eedod for v temporary- -structures in making more permanent improvements will ; be a tremendous Quantity. It is expected1 to have work under way by July 20. J. 3.
