WAR SUMMARY
BY J. W. T: MASON
Former European
the United ,
Manager of
Press.
New York. July 13. The long ab
sence of his name from the news
-while vast events have been 'occur-1
ring in the eastern theatre of war
suggests that perhaps there is truth-
"in the reports from -Russia that Field
Marshal von Hindenburg has fallen
T into disfavor, it is improbable, how-
. ever, that tho-cause is the 'enormous
-losses his armies suffered, as the
reports allege.
Since the -war began, -German lead
ers nowhere have spared lives and
von Hlndenburg has merely followed
precedent in this respect. If he is
no longer in favor in the .kaiser's
councils, it is probably due to his
fruitless efforts to capture Warsaw,
coupled with the absolute fearlessness
;pf his, criticism. At, the outbreak of
the war. Von Hlndenburg went into
retirement partly because off. his
comments upon the: military genius
of the kaiser.
It would be In - keeping with his
character If he explained certain de
feats ; both In the east and west in
words which would not be appreciated
' by the kaiser.
Iff Von Hindgnbdrg continues to hold
th full confidence of the emperor, it
is difficult to understand why Field
Marshal von Mackeqsen, Von Hinden-
Durgs. suooramaie, snouta have been
entrusted with ' the direction ot ' the
tSalician .campaign. Von Mackensen's
election was a particular ilow to Von
tHlndenbu r g's pres ti g e, because t he ul
timate objective of the Galician drive
-la now being ' revealed as an t attack
on ; Warsaw; from the southeast.- This
Is the only- available direction from
which Von Hindenburg did not try to
attack ' the Polish capital.
After Lemberg, Von Mackensen was
made a field marshal and given equal
rank with Von Hindenburg. -The title
s failed to carry him forward, however,
Just as it failed to carry &ron Hlnden
burg forward. . Von Mackensen is. now
encountering the same characteristic
-sudden recovery of th Russian power
of defense which' Von Hlndenburg was
'unable to overcome. - The result may
cause Von Hindenburg's eventual res
toration to favor, unless Von Macken
sen captures Warsaw. If ; that - im
probability occurs. Von Hindenburg's
subordination will perhaps be perma
nent. ' ' .

ACTION IS DISPLEASING TO THE OWNERS
S. B. Cobb, secretary of the Standard
Box & Lumber Co.. stated this morn
ing that the - company will not rebutia
the mill at the. foot of East Alder,
street, which was destroyed by rirea.
few weeks ago. ''The plant willjiot be
rebuilt, he gays, because toe civ wu i
permit it-
"I took the matter up with the build
ing inspector's office, explained Mr,
Cobb this morning, 'and was informed
mat the city of i'ortiana oojocae w
having sawmills located on the water
front within the city limits; that if
one of the mills now so located is
destroyed, that will mean the end of
H as an industry in the city.
"The company owns three blocks of
ground that formed the site for the
old; mill, including the waterfrontage,
and certainly we would rebuild if per
mitted -to do so; and it would be a
better and larger plant than the one
destroyed. It would mean the s tea ay
employment i f about 300 men In the
manufacture of ; lumber and lumber
products.
"The reason given for refusing a
permit. I suppose, is that Portland
wants to become a great shipping port
and the waterfront is wanted for docks
and warehouses. But Z . don't think
this will be accomplished if manufac
turing plants are driven out. The lum
ber industry is ; looked upon as tne
state's greatest asset, but apparently
the city does not want the 'industry to
flourish within its limits."
The old mill cut about "100,000 feet of
lumber daily, and much of it was
shipped by water to California. For
the present, the company is handling
Its business from the new mill built
about a year ago at Scofield, on the
Tillamook branch of the Southern Pa
cific. .

whether or not it will be rebuilt,

Quebec Awaits First Cargo From
Portland With Interest.
VWIthin the next few days the San
Francisco owned barkentine John C
Meyer is due to arrive from Portland.
Or., with the first cargo of Douglas

ever brought here direct," writesjthe
Quebec correspondent of the American
Lumberman of Chicago. This should
gfis
be interesting news to ttte uniteq
Ltes lumber trade, . for it is oenevea
local lumber circles that the voyage
of the John C. Meyer is the forerunner
of a large commerce, between the east
ern Canadian provinces and the lum
ber manufacturers of the west coast.
While lumber ia one of the principal
products and exports of this section,
the domestic market can not supply
the large sized and extra strong struc
tural timbers such as are offered by
the United States producers of long
leaf yellow pine and Douglas fir. Lum
ber which might answer the require
ments for factory and mill construc
tion i nrnrinnert in the forests of the
Canadian southwest, but the high cost
of railroad transportation, or the
longer carriage if transported by
water, gives the United States lumber
producers a strong auvaia.
Th harkentin sailed from Port

which is a considerable item for 'a

TO TOW THREE LOG RAFTS
Each Raft to Hold 5,000,000 Feet
of Lumber.
The Benson Lumber company of San
Diego, Cal., through its president,
Frank Lynch, has announced the clos
ing of a contract with the Merchants
& Shipowners" Tug Boat company of
San Francisco for the, use Of the tug
Hercules this summer. - This tug is to
tow three log : rafts from Wallace
slough on the Columbia river to San
13d ego for the Benson Lumber com
pany, the first raft being expected to
reach San Diego this week. . It was
taken to sea last week. -
President Lynch Btated that the
Benson company expects i to continue
and extend the pole department that
was established last year. With this
end in view several thousand cedar
tmvTba will be brouaht down on the log
rafts as deck loads. These poles are
to be used in telephone and power
transmission work throughout south
ern California. ' x. ' - i
Interesting facts aoouf the Benson
log rafts are as follows:
Each raft is cigar shaped and it
takes 200 tons of chain to bind them
together.
Each raft contains c approximately
5,000,000 feet of logs, or enough, lum
ber to build completely 200 eight room
houses.
Each raft la about 800 feet long.
Each raft draws over 28 feet of
water, or as mucn as tne largest trans
orpanio liners.
Each raft carries a, deckload of 3000
cedar Doles, or enough to build a power
line five miles.? It takes 12 men three
months to build one raft.
It takes two weeks to tow the rafts
from the Columbia river to San IDego,
a distance Of over 1200 -miles.
