Newlands, a rancher, and Mrs. Cath erine Newlands. bis mother, are dead today, the result of a collision be tween their automobile and a Santa Fe locomotive at the Santa, Fe "death crossing" in South Pasadena. New lands was killed instantly, while his mother died before she could be taken to a hospital. Th accident occurred late yester day, within a few feet of tiie spot where, a week previously, Mrs. Isabel . Symington was killed and three per sona injured under similar circum stances. L, Steeveslof this city requesting him to see that the Salem ! policemen and firemen are employed j on an eight hour day basis. Hoff states that he has been advised that! these city employes are being em- I ployed longer than eight hours a day. ' and unless his request is complied with he will take the matter into the oourts. He says that the supreme court opin ion in the case of State vs. Dr. R, E. Lee Steiner is broad' enough to cover all state, county or city employes. ATTORNEY GENERALSHIP IS GEO. BROWN'S GOAL Roseburg, Or., Jan. 13. George M. Brown, for the past 17 years prose cuting attorney fur this district, saya he may in a short time announce him self a candidate for attorney general on the Republican ticket. It has been understood for some time that Brown would become a candidate for that of fice in the event. Mr. Crawford decided to run for governor.
