1 V 1 ' . THE OREGON SUNDAY JOURNAL. PORTLAND. SUNDAY. MORNING. SEPTEMBER 21, 1913. (Si l '! t 4 4-i SIM PRINCESS WINS ni IN THE 'SWEETHEARTS' Christie MacDonald Charms ' ' Her Devoted Followers in Is. I 1 Ml I New Koie. ' By Charles Pamton. ' New York, Sept. JO. That real prin cess eC comic opera, charming, genuine Christlce MacDonald who must have been horn while a lark was singing may count upon her devoted followers. . now that she Is once again a staq-e prin cess in "Sweethearts." :-. . At the New Amsterdam theatre Miss MacDonald wins a new triumph, and this fn spite of a book that dragged and a score that lagged interminably. The ' seeming conspiracy between the authors and the composer made the operetta as long and almost as solemn as grand opera. It will be easy enough to out the book. Any one with a sense of time can do that. A sense of humor Is not needed, as Harry B. Smith and Mme. de ' Oresao have been methodical, rather than merry.' in their work. The plot is so extensive that It runs van to the end of the last act It , ahould toe clipped before another sun ets. How it has escaped the lawn mower up to this-time can only be ex Wined on the theory that Werba & Luescher are conservative managers, 'who approach New York slowly and jcareftilly. What they should realize most 1f all Is that their prised prim lonna is of first consideration. , Sanger Lies la score. , It would be nothing short of a calam- , Ity tf Miss MacDonald were sacrificed , ,to the possible ambition of Victor Her- ,,bert The danger lies in a score that is a bit too pretentious ' to be ' popular; While much of the music is charming, a great deal of it is so evidently "Ambi tious ' that Mr. Herbert must bav wrlt- ' ten It with the hope that springs eternal In "the Metropolitan Opera- House, only to fait flat on the sidewalk outside. This Is said more In warning than In criti cism, Something, should be done to ."lift" the muslo and give It the gayety upon -which the life of a light musical , offering depends. That Mr. Herbert can , do this is not to be doubted, for he has - done it timrand again. . . gecond Act Oarer, RIUMPH STARS , Musically, the second act of "Sweet- f' hearts'' proved much gayer than the ! J first. The story 1s largely responsible j - for the melanoholy note-In the score, be- ' causo'trm princess who was doing laun ? ' dry work In ' an embroidered skirt f. couldn't feel ur that a philandering : .lieutenant loved her for herself alone, f Her grief U the thought of this found , expression in in, "Anfelus" number, ' which, though beautiful, was not enllvn ! " ing.. With' all bis faults, she loved the . lieutenant ttill. But w far as the story I went this little romance was a waste of ; time, for no sooner is the curtain down j - than fciylvla snuggled up to a royal ctiap who was within a step of the throne. J 4 '- ' Woman lings Delightfully. ' We could only conclude that one love ' story would have served the purpose ouue SB wen, u not oeiier, ana -we cer tainly could have worried along with t fewer of those musical conversations. 1 Dcnald to cheer us up, even when the 1 authors compelled her to be sad. She I sang delightfully, beginning with the pretty song from which the operetta takes Its name, and both in her singing and her acting she as refreshingly free from affectation. Her "Sweethearts" was a breese. her "Angelua" a sigh. She put the heart of a child into "Mother Goose," and brought out her naturally t ' say spirits later on when she sang of I what rhe had never been taught in t convent. Here was the real Christie ; ,MacDonald. llght-hearUd and brignt as ; a summer's day. But it was in "Cricket : on the Hearth" that she warmed the heart with the tenderness In her voice, ; She tr ad a great deal of this number, j and it was worth all she made of it. : MOVING PICTURE DEVICE f. DESIGNED FOR AMATEURS ,.',- " '.' . A moving picture machine, which is a oombined camera, printer and projeo- ' tor nut up in compact shape for carry t lng, has recently been invented and pat t anted, especially for the use of ama- taurs. As a camera, it will take moving, ' still, flashlight and time exposures, and ' by means of its projecting device can be used for enlarging to life else. After the film has been exposed, the same mar I chine can be used to print it A 300-cp. incandescent lamp, to be attached to any light socket, and an adjustable lens quickly transform the machine into a " projector for throwing plotures on a ; ' screen. The film can be stopped at any ; time without danger of burning and the . machine can thus be used as a lecture stereoptlcon 700 ft. to take the place ; Of 4000 ft of film. 1 Philadelphia reports 7900 school fiupils furnished appetising noon unohes at low prices by Home and School league In the past year.
