:-. . At the New Amsterdam theatre Miss
MacDonald wins a new triumph, and
this fn spite of a book that dragged and
a score that lagged interminably. The
' seeming conspiracy between the authors
and the composer made the operetta as
long and almost as solemn as grand
opera. It will be easy enough to out the
book. Any one with a sense of time
can do that. A sense of humor Is not
needed, as Harry B. Smith and Mme. de
' Oresao have been methodical, rather
than merry.' in their work.
The plot is so extensive that It runs
van to the end of the last act It

from affectation. Her "Sweethearts"
was a breese. her "Angelua" a sigh. She
put the heart of a child into "Mother
Goose," and brought out her naturally

Geraldine Farrar, who will be seen
The captivating voice and genius of
Geraldine Farrar, who la soon "to be
presented for the first time in Portland
by Lola Steers-Wynn Coman, has given
her such vogue in the Kuropean music
centers and at the Metropolitan Opera
House, New Tork, that, young as she is,
for she is still in her 20s, she has al
ready amassed a fortune through her
voice. Her yearly income runs into tens
of thousands of dollars, and bar fortune
nag been earned by her own genius and
hard work.

popular fancy like wildfire. Her graoe,
keen vision and cleverness, her refine
ment of beauty and girlish innocence,
united with 'a voice, in its wonderful
caressing beauty of tone, quite unlike
tmat of any other soprano, made a most
unusual combination.
No grand opera star who today visits
Berlin Is more idolised than Geraldine
Farrar. The empress and crown prin
cess of Germany are her devoted ad-,
herents. on terms of Intimate friendship
with this young New England girl.
Alwin Schroeder, named by many crit
ics as the greatest of living cellists,
will appear with Miss Farrar. He will be
remembered as for many years the first
'cello of the Boston Symphony Orches
tra, and member of the wonderfully de
lightful Kneiael Quartet.
This concert will open the season of
Lois Steers-Wynn Coman October 1.

several nights lately the dog, which Is a
most important character in the piece,
has been Indisposed and unable to go on.
They have a regulation understudy for
the dog actor, and the understudy has
done much of the work the last few
nights.
