'' Weary from breasting: a fierce north vrest gale,, for apparently s great many miles, a carrier pigeon arrived at the light station at Heceta Head, 40 miles south' of Yaquina, 'bay,and1,betng too ex hausted to (fa farther took .refuge there and Is now being taken care of by Keep er Olaf Hansen, according to Informa tion received -., thismorning by Light house Inspector J.- M. Elllcott It U known that the pigeon is one of - those belonging to .the Oregon Homing- club which was released recently Cither at Leyland o-r Sifson, Cay. ' ,.' .'- '-.. . .Keeper Hansen nays, in his, communi cation that the bird has apparently come ft long distance? as it Is very poor andwasln an almost exhausted condi tion when It arrived at the station. The strong northwest winds which have been blowing along the coast for the last week or so, , accompanied by heavy- fog, evidently got the bird off its course and it probably got some distance out to sea. It has a ring on each foot, one being of white f metal, marked P. B. 5 3713, while the other is unmarked and 1 i of brass. Several Birds MiSiingV E. H. Bower, a member of the Oregon Homing club, Identified the pigeon as one belonging, to. ft .member of the club, tut he was unable to nay who the owner s from the number. He thinks that, it la one of those released at Blsson a, week .ago today, of which there are 15 on the way. He tayt that this. Is the worst year they have had and a large number of birds have, been lost,' , probably due to the bad weather. They, usually make the 300 mile flight in about eight and a half hoursr but this year they have benft week on the way already. HAIXMAKER NOT NECESSARY Weather Observer Howell of Wasco ; Thinks Nature Sufficient. J, ' R. Howell, ' cooperative- weather observer at Wasco, is of the opinion that if left to Itself, that part of the country would have as much precipi tation as it now has with the assistance of Charles Hatfield, the Los. Angeles rainmaker. He says that there are only a few cases in the last 25 years when the rainfall has been Irps than an inch, which Is the amount contracted for by Hatfield. .. ' - :;j .. v 1 1 - Mr. Howell,, who is stopping over here for.: the day on his way home from Eugene, where he has been attending the state .convention of the Odd Fel lows as a. delegate, says that Hatfield has made a contract with some of the people at Wasco to furnish onoOttCh of rain from April 20 to July 25 for 3800. - . For anything over that he will gt ft bonus of J200,', which be has Already made, as he now locks only .15 of an inch to) make an Inch and a half, Mr. Howell says that a part of the inch-had already fallen when the apparatus was Bet up.
