Chief Engineer J. B. C. Lockwood announced thl morning 'that while, heretofore the material dredged from the river bottom had been carried away" only about 1000 feet and thfen dumped In the' river, from now on It will be carried at least 2000 feet and flumped on the bank or in shallow water, ' - It is believed that the new method of disposing of the material win nave very beneficial effect on the channel as It will Drevent the- dredgi terial from running back into the chan nel and forming obstructions in ne spots while others are being removed At present there is nothing being . done in the way of improvement of the regular, ship's channel because the dredge Portland Is, undergoing an ex tensive overhauling and the dredge Co lumbia Is dredging out a turning basin opposite the atanaara un company tanks at Portsmouth. .But the channel work wilt be resumed early in the SDrinar with rreater efficiency tharl ever. Bv thai time the dredge Port land will haver been, rebuilt and Its ca pacity practically doubled, ado enougn .line and .pontoons will have been er cured to give the respective pipelines the length stated above. Chief Engineer Lockwood says ths Port of Portland commission did much good work during the year which closed yesterday and with 1909 will practically open a new era In that from this year the commission will control the towage and pilotage systems from Portland to ine sea in accordance wim me recent ly enacted law. Preparations to take care of the business are now extensive ly under way ana plans or sea going tug and stern wheel river towboats arc expected here tomorrow from the east. John H. Steven son, and ' Lv W. Humphreys, his at torneys, ararued the motion for .another trial before-Judge Gantenbeln, and the court oeciinea to grant it. "I'thlnk I could do better on another trial," said Daly, after he had been re turned to the little cell reserved for men who are condemned to die, occupied only by himself and Jkmes A. Finch. "But I have no money to appeal, and my at torneys cannot be expected to go Into their own pockets for me. "I have Deen convicted of something I don't remember anything about, I know that I am .not right at times,-and I - suppose the state figured that it would hang me, because I would be an expense, at the asylum and I could nor work In the penitentiary, because I am a. cripple. It is harJ.-rrr be up against It this way. Just because I have no money and my friends are In the same fix," Daly started for Balem in the af ternoon In charge of Deputy Sheriff Frank Beatty. xnere he will be put under the death watch until the fateful January 29 arrives. His attorneys ex press little hope that they would be able-to- get- a -newtrTaTT6r mm, even IT the case were appealed. As a last resort an effort probably will be made to have Governor Cham berlain commute the sentence to life imprisonment. Daly was convicted of murder in the first degree for killing Harry Kenny, a saloon man, who was shot down after informing Daly that he bad no work for him. Daly pleaded insanity, claiming that he remembered nothing about the deed. CASES PENDING IN SALEM CIRCUIT COURT IUlm nnrean of Thft Jnnrnal I Salem. Or.. Jan. 1.
