. Chief Engineer Lockwood Says Work
.' of Port of Portland Commission la
(jetting C)own ' on a Systematic
, Basis With Much Satisfaction.
.4 When the Port Of Portland dredges
are set' to work this year deepening
the channel from Portland to the sea
a- new method or operation win be in
augurated. Chief Engineer J. B. C.
Lockwood announced thl morning 'that
while, heretofore the material dredged
from the river bottom had been carried
away" only about 1000 feet and thfen
dumped In the' river, from now on It
will be carried at least 2000 feet and
flumped on the bank or in shallow
water, ' -
It is believed that the new method of
disposing of the material win nave
very beneficial effect on the channel
as It will Drevent the- dredgi
terial from running back into the chan
nel and forming obstructions in ne
spots while others are being removed
At present there is nothing being
. done in the way of improvement of
the regular, ship's channel because the
dredge Portland Is, undergoing an ex
tensive overhauling and the dredge Co
lumbia Is dredging out a turning basin
opposite the atanaara un company
tanks at Portsmouth. .But the channel
work wilt be resumed early in the
SDrinar with rreater efficiency tharl
ever. Bv thai time the dredge Port
land will haver been, rebuilt and Its ca
pacity practically doubled, ado enougn
.line and .pontoons will have been er
cured to give the respective pipelines
the length stated above.
Chief Engineer Lockwood says ths
Port of Portland commission did much
good work during the year which closed
yesterday and with 1909 will practically
open a new era In that from this year
the commission will control the towage
and pilotage systems from Portland to
ine sea in accordance wim me recent
ly enacted law. Preparations to take
care of the business are now extensive
ly under way ana plans or sea going
tug and stern wheel river towboats arc
expected here tomorrow from the east.
There is a possibility of the Port
buvlnsr a. couDle of the O. R. & N. com
party's boats that are now In the tow-
log service at tne mourn or me Co
lumbia and on the river but at lea
two sea going tugs and one river tow
' boat Will undoubtedly be built for the
service.
In speaking of the accomplishment
. during tne year iub. t.mer engineer
Lockwood said today that besides keen-
ing the channel to the sea In good con
dition the dredges have cut a turning

were also great roasts of beef and mut

the fresh meats had been swept away
and the hungry still came canned foods
were hastily made ready and generous

The real old fashioned plum pudding

But no one waa turned away hungry.

have had small reason for thankfulness.
Beside the 400 who partook of this
dinner, 25 families where the wage earn

add a wing to be used as a nursery.
There is a large indebtedness on the

will go on unhampered.
