ShannoiT Says Millions ; of Tons Are ' Available Along Columbia. ' ' "As soon as transportation down the Columbia has been assured by he re moval of obstructions near The Dalles there will be no, monopoly of the stone block trade. St. ; Helen's quarry will be only one of a dozen as large or larger on the banks of the big river. There are millions and millions of tons of rock out of which Belgian blocks can be made within a hundred miles of Portland," said A. M. Shannon, of the Warren ; Construction company, ,. this morning. ' Mr. Shannon has an option on a large body of rock near Fisher's Landing. He says he has walked over every foot of the ground for five miles on both sides of this point on the Columbia and knows . where an Inexhaustible supply of stone block material can be ob tained. "I think." said Mr. Shannon, "that quarries will soon be opened up slong the river wherever suitable rock can be procured as the paving business opened up in the next few years by progressive policy adopted by the pres ent administration will demand compe tition and the companies must seek re lief from the exorbitant charges made by the St Helens quarry owners.
