LAUGHTER SHOW
- AT THE BAKER
"Hip, Hip, Hooray" at the Baker this
week Is a show that every theatregoer
who likes to laugh should see. There
Is something funny . all the time and
while the music Is not new, the chorus,
which is by far the prettiest that has
visited the Baker this year, renders It
In a way that lends a charm to the
very atmosphere.
Rice and Cady, the joint stars as
Schultz. the Inventor of Exoited Oats,
a new breakfast food; snd his partner.
Kaffeeklatsch, a retired capitalist finan
cially Interested with schults, are
adepts at German dialogue. The scene
Is at Doolittle college where Kaffeek
latsch has a nephew attending school.
The Inventors of Excited Oats decide
to attempt to sell their new food to the
college athletes, but meet with little
success.
. The rest of the play present them
as college students, at the boat house
where the college crew are preparing
for the great race of the year. Nobody
knows whether they won or lost. The
dances and ensembles arranged by Well
ington Cross are the hit of the show.
Neither of the stars are particularly
charming but the chorus on the whole
Is pretty, graceful and alive with fun
which makes "Hip, Hip. Hooray," a
show that anyone who loves a good time
without tragedy, should see.
THREE THOUSAND
FOR STATE MISSIONS
The November number of the Port
land Churchman, the publication of the-
Episcopal church ror tne aiocesn or
Oregon, has Just been Issued. The lead
ing article Is a call for $3,000 for mis
sions In Oregon before September 1,
1909, and states that the bishop and the
board of missions hope to ' raise this
amount by the date mentioned. All
that is needed, the article soys. Is less
parochialism and more missionary en
thusiasm on the part of churchmen and
women. Inspiring leadership on me pari
of the clergy and an awakening of war
dens and vestrymen to a sense of dio
cesan responsibilities and opportuni
ties. Another article deals with the Chris
tian duty of making a will. The writer
holds tnai mis is a opienuiu prepurnuun
for a Christian, as It gives him an op
portunity to review ail that God has
given him and to realise that as he
brought nothing into the world he can
take nothing out of it.

CITY MAY HELP
RUN ROCK CRUSHER
After having been spasmodically dis
cussed for the past two years, the ad
visability of the city owning and oper
ating a rock crusher will be afcaln taken
up. this time by the charter revision
committee of the United East Side Push
clubs. This question has been discussed
by practically every improvement club
In the city but has never reached a
point, where any definite action was
taken. It la hoped that this time tho
matter Can be brought before the char
ter committee in such a way that It
will be included In the new charter.
Many prominent east side men,
among whom Is Councilman Wills, are
of the opinion that the county and city
should work together on this proposi
tion and. that a plant at Kelly's
butte with an electric spur and bunkers
could be Installed very cheaply.

A. M. ShannoiT Says Millions

' "As soon as transportation down the
Columbia has been assured by he re
moval of obstructions near The Dalles
there will be no, monopoly of the stone
block trade. St. ; Helen's quarry will
be only one of a dozen as large or
larger on the banks of the big river.
There are millions and millions of tons
of rock out of which Belgian blocks
can be made within a hundred miles of
Portland," said A. M. Shannon, of the
Warren ; Construction company, ,. this
morning. '
Mr. Shannon has an option on a large
body of rock near Fisher's Landing.
He says he has walked over every foot
of the ground for five miles on both
sides of this point on the Columbia and
knows . where an Inexhaustible supply
of stone block material can be ob
tained. "I think." said Mr. Shannon,
"that quarries will soon be opened up
slong the river wherever suitable rock
can be procured as the paving business
opened up in the next few years by
progressive policy adopted by the pres
